Georgia city cancels parade amid Confederate flag lawsuit

Source: ABC News

A city in Georgia has voted to stop using taxpayer dollars to fund a veterans parade following a lawsuit by a group of Confederate descendants who were barred from flying the Confederate flag during the event.

The Alpharetta City Council unanimously voted to stop sponsoring the Old Soldiers Day parade, which it has co-hosted to honor war veterans for almost 70 years. In its early years, the parade was a tribute to local Civil War veterans.

Sons of Confederate Veterans spokesman Martin O’Toole told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the city cancelled the parade over political correctness and was “dishonoring all American veterans" by doing so.

The group had flown the Confederate flag in the parade until the city objected beginning around 2017, the Roswell Mills Camp 1547 Sons of Confederate Veterans said. They were told they could remain in the parade as long as they didn’t fly the flag. They refused, saying no one would recognize them without it, the newspaper reported.

I'm sure those same people claim to love 'murica, yet they totally fail to see the irony of honoring soldiers who fought against America in a bid to keep slavery.

1. Soldiers for the Confederacy WERE TRAITORS, plain and simple.

Also, most do not realize that the fanciful stories of Johnny Reb marching off to protect the "states' rights" of the South were just fanciful stories. Many of the young men that fought for the Confederacy were conscripted and abducted from their towns, families, and lives to protect the interests of the rich and powerful. Further, the lines between the wealthy and privileged and the common man were specifically drawn to reinforce the primacy of the southern aristocracy. Many of the southern gentry's sons WERE EXEMPTED from the ravages of the Civil War.

..unable to paste Charlottesville kkknazi rally pics but there is that. At link, photo depicting racists use of hate flag at a rally where a woman was killed and many were injured because of their hate-filled propganda, violence against other Americans. Hate speech is not free speech, has no place in our democrstic society.

After all, the Confederates didn't want to be American anymore, right? It's the American veterans who preserved our country.

To all the Confederate flag worshippers: go fuck yourselves...

The town was right to put a stop to it by any means necessary.

AMERICAN veterans fought to protect AMERICA. The Confederates fought to destroy America.

they just quit using tax payers dollars to fund the parade, they can still march down main street, as long as they use their own funds to get a permit.

Honoring traitors to the country is the wrong way to honor our US Veterans, of which I am one.

You explain it, admit errors of past mind sets, move to correct bad outcomes. It cannot be changed by hiding it. In many countries ancestors served and died in support of something that seems absurd from today's perspective.

Somehow we failed due dilligence to remind and commemorate those who fought Nazis. We tried to forget about it because it was painful, and now it's back.

On Memorial Day in 1871 at the Civil War Unknown Monument at Arlington National Cemetery, Douglass’ speech was resolute:

We are sometimes asked in the name of patriotism to forget the merits of this fearful struggle, and to remember with equal admiration those who struck at the nation’s life, and those who struck to save it—those who fought for slavery and those who fought for liberty and justice. I am no minister of malice . . . I would not repel the repentant, but . . . may my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth if I forget the difference between the parties to that . . . bloody conflict . . . I may say if this war is to be forgotten, I ask in the name of all things sacred what shall men remember?

If the South had won, they would have allied themselves with Hitler during WW2 since they had same ideology. It would have been hell on Earth.
