Rep. Duncan Hunter says he'll resign 'shortly after the holidays'

Source: Washington Post

Rep. Duncan D. Hunter (R-Calif.), who pleaded guilty in federal court this week to misusing campaign funds, announced Friday that he will resign from Congress “shortly after the holidays.”

“It has been an honor to serve the people of California’s 50th District, and I greatly appreciate the trust they have put in me over these last 11 years.” Hunter said in a statement announcing his resignation.

Hunter and his wife, Margaret, were indicted on campaign finance charges last summer. The outgoing congressman is awaiting sentencing after he entered a guilty plea on a single count on Tuesday; he had previously pleaded not guilty. The couple were charged with spending more than $200,000 in campaign funds on personal expenses, including vacations and household items.

“Whatever my time in custody is, I will take that hit,” Hunter said Monday in an interview with San Diego-based TV station KUSI. “My only hope is that the judge does not sentence my wife to jail. I think my kids need a mom in the home.”

The Marine veteran pleaded guilty this week to one charge of misusing campaign funds. He and his wife were accused of using more than $250,000 in campaign funds to pay for personal expenses, including family vacations, theater tickets and school tuition.
Hunter will be sentenced March 17. He faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

This is a developing story. It will be updated.

through the holidays because if he left now, they are pretty much "fired".

Whatever money that he might receive for pay would most likely be garnished to pay off his and his wife's dalliances and any fines and penalties assessed by the court along with a prison sentence, so he's toast regardless (unless you-know-who swoops in with a get-out-of-jail-free pardon).

In any case, that guilty plea probably had all sorts of caveats in it.

It was him and Chris Collins (R NY-27) who both got reelected while under indictment. Both have finally resigned or stated they planned to resign.

Hunter only won by less than 2% so that seat is do-able!

He's a carpet bagger not liked by even many Republicans in the district. Oh, and Issa has said Trump should pardon Hunter, who is expected to announce endorsement of Issa soon. They are thick as thieves.

I'm just spit-balling here, but there's a reasonable chance Ammar Campa-Najjar could prevail in a special election with a carpetbagger, Issa, and two other pubs splitting the vote. And an incumbent Ammar Campa-Najjar would be hard to beat in the November election.

And this is where the spit-balling comes in. Could he be waiting to mess with the election process to assure the seat doesn't flip?

Ammar Campa-Najjar (D)
Carl DeMaio (R)
Darrell Issa (R)
Brian Jones (R)
David Edick (Independent)
Helen Horvath (Independent)

Ammar Campa-Najjar is running to finish what he started- Taking Duncan Hunter's place in CA-50

I believe Duncan's on his way out, despite what he's been saying about staying in the race. He's no longer welcome in the House, and he's a liability for the republicans. I believe he'll be making the announcement soon.

If he doesn't, Ammar's in it to win it in November, and he'll fight his way 'till then if there's no special election.

Campa-Najar barely lost last time- 51.7% 134,362 votes to 48.3% 125,448 votes- and he's in a strong position to beat Issa or whoever tries to scramble over Hunter's body.

Like Nate McMurray in New York's 27th District, who's running for the seat vacated when criminal Chris Collins quit; we may find another special election that we can devote all our time and energy to winning - two excellent shots at turning republican seats into Democratic seats in the House of Representatives. These are two of the most competitive races in the country right now.

Both of these candidates, if they win, will keep their seats, and help transform heavy-R districts into solid D.

Edited to add Nate McMurray's info - I've adopted him since his run in 2018- I'm going to keep boosting him incessantly here- His special election will be in April, and we can push him over the edge- he came to less than 0.5% last time:
