Harvard and Yale students disrupt football game for fossil fuel protest
Source: Guardian
Students and alumni from Harvard and Yale disrupted the annual football game between the two elite universities on Saturday, occupying the field in New Haven, Connecticut, at half-time and demanding the colleges divest from fossil fuels.
A group of more than 100 protesters planned to stall the high-profile game for as long as possible, probably resulting in their arrests.
. . . "They believe that they can engage with these companies and get them to change their fundamentally extractive business models, which we think comes from a place of naivety amounting to gross negligence," Nora Heaphy, an undergraduate at Yale, said.
"It's absurd to make those kinds of claims. So since then our campaign has moved away from administrative engagement, recognizing that it is often a stalling tactic."

(63,912 posts)Lot of people there were pretty pissed off. We were tailgating near one of the portals and heard about the protest and game delay. There was lots of confusion about what was going on until the word spread about the reason for the delay.
Both teams returned to the field. Then the protestors left. The game continued and Harvard won 29-13.
Unfortunately, I managed to choke on a cannoli and since the medic van was right at our gate I was seen by the medics. I choked up the remains of the cannoli, finally cleared my windpipe of phlegm (took a while) and returned to the game.
I'm fine now but I really wanted Yale to win. However, my cannoli choke was enough excitement for me. I'm just glad I wasn't hauled off to the ER

(9,090 posts)none of those schools have any excuse to continue broadcasting on those stations, which all deny global warming because they have to follow linmbaugh

(12,546 posts)Alumni sports associations carry WAY too much clout with universities. Because of the money they bring in. The die hard fans watch the TV broadcast but listen to the home announcers on radio.
Universities want ratings and they're not going to walk away from them because of Limbaugh. His audience isnt what it used to be anyway.

(9,090 posts)limbaugh got demoted in colorado/850 KOA, possibly because of CU activism. they may not tell but he got moved to aa lesser signal. the activism there was light but long term and that may have been all iit took to force the station to decide
but linmbo's still on nearly 600 stations.
and it''s not up to alum and sports establishment. when student protests point out the absurdity of those associations the advertisers will head for the hills except for those who support trump and global warming. or they may there are plenty of other stations in many locations, and streaming.
and the radio licensing revenue is nothing compared with tv. in new mexico the licensing co actually pays the station! so is the uni getting less revenue? UNM actually advertises on that limbo station - they advertise their diversity and scholarship!
it doessn't fucking matter what they school 'leaders' do, it's whether the station can still get advertisers after the communities see the backlash and boycotts

(12,546 posts)Students can protest all they want; alumni far outnumber them no matter what school. We are seeing more FM stations cover games, but AM still dominates. The one closest to me is #1 in ratings by a HUGE number. UGA isnt going to leave that station or the big one in ATL. Limabugh will die off before that changes (and that may be quicker than we think). And that goes for most of the colleges in the south & midwest.

(9,090 posts)even the republican alum may be conservative but recognize linbaugh/russian radio has destroyed the party and is taking it down.
sports talk is huge with a lot of loud stations that can take up the slack in many places that can provide more talk time and sell more merchandise.
RW radio giant iheart/clearchannel was recently $20 bil in debt and still going because it's worth trillions to them. those 260 limbaugh stations piggybacking 87 universities is huge to them. and they're not going to let it fade before the planet burns.
