Romney Releasing 2011 Taxes At 3 PM, ‘Summary’ Of 1990-2009 Returns
Source: TPM
Mitt Romney will release a copy of his 2011 tax returns at 3 PM Friday as well as a summary of his tax rates -- but not, as requested by Democrats, copies of his actual returns -- for the years 1990 - 2009.
According to the campaign, Romney paid a 14.1% tax rate. Pushing back against speculation from Democrats, most notably Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV), that he paid little to no taxes at some point in his career, Romney's campaign now claims the lowest effective rate he ever paid was 13.66% and that the average across the 20 year period 20.20%.

(61,694 posts)Suppose he says that he paid 15% tax rate each year. 15% of what? If he's hidden most of his "income" by whittling it down to nothing using tax loopholes, bogus "expenses," and other tax dodges, then he's still paying very little in taxes.
Suppose Romney's declared income for 2010 was $10,000.

(52,288 posts)counting both the employee and employer share, that is, for a total of 15.3%, up to the cap.
someone making about $1 million/year is paying about 4% in payroll taxes because of the cap on social security taxes.
during this period, rmoney might not have even had that, because it's possible that ALL of his income, at least in some years, came from dividends and capital gains rather than labor income, meaning NONE of it faced payroll taxes.

(95,337 posts)He thinks the problem is solved showing a summary. To me that just says he really is hiding something. He would be better off just not showing anything.
And yes some freeper types try to equate this with the birth certificate situation that Obama had 4 years ago. But remember this - when asked Obama released the OFFICIAL birth certificate issued by the state of Hawaii. The long form is not the official birth certificate but when the freepers realized they had nothing it was the only way to keep the damn freeper issue alive.

(42,287 posts)Remember this? "...frankly if I had paid more than are legally due I dont think Id be qualified to become president." and yet he did not claim some of his 'charity" in 2011 so he would pay more taxes and not fall below the 13% level previously set!
The man can't lie straight--he can't even tell the truth straight.

(5,068 posts)So 5 months after the April deadline, you claim 13% tax rate. Something smells here, especially when he had all this time to "shape" his taxes to fit what he wants them to look like. I would not trust any of these statements, show the full forms, not summaries....He is lying about this because I believe in several of his actual tax forms he shows he was not a Massachusetts resident and was not legal to become governor.

(78,249 posts)That's not going to tell us whether he misreported his management fees as a Bain partner as capital gains (15% tax rate vs. 35%). Or how much $$$ he's stashed overseas. It'll look like this:

(731 posts)Piecemeal. First Nixon sat before the teevee cameras with 3-ring binders with the presidential seal, telling the nation, "this is all the tapes". A few days later, he had to release the tapes themselves. Then the nation heard the conspiracy unfold from the oval office. Haldeman, Erlichman, the top 2 guys in the White House went to jail for it. Along with Dean, who fingered the whole deal.
So today we have Romney's 3-ring binders...

(85 posts)Castellanos on tax summary: Is this a joke?
By MAGGIE HABERMAN | 9/21/12 2:33 PM EDT
Alex Castellanos, the former Mitt Romney strategist from 2008 who has alternately been critical and praising of the current campaign, left no doubt where he stands on the decision to release a summary of the candidate's tax rates over 20 years.
"At first I thought this was an April Fool's Joke," said Castellanos, who tweeted something to that effect at me earlier. "But it isn't April. I can't imagine that David Axelrod will now say, I'm glad Mitt put this issue behind him. This will drag Mitt's taxes back into the debate. And there's not many days left. I just can't imagine why they would do this. There are 40 days left and you have now made more of them about Mitt's taxes....you don't serve a life sentence and then confess afterward. They've taken their beating on this (already) ... I just don't understand how a (being) 'little pregnant' strategy (works)."
Other Republican operatives have emailed in with a similar reaction - that the summary is going to revive, instead of settle, questions on an issue where what had seemed to be the worst was already behind Romney.

(2,921 posts)I don't buy any of Rmoney's claims or taxes.
IRS needs to audit and examine every piece of Rmoney's claim.
If it's deemed to be fraudulent, then seize all of Rmoney's assets and file liens on the offshore accounts.
Then arrest Rmoney for tax evasion.
