Donald Trump appears to be getting the cold shoulder from his own ice skating rinks, after the Trump organization reportedly took the unusual step of removing the presidents name from the two Central Park businesses ahead of the holiday season.
First reported by the Washington Post, city officials said the decision to remove Trumps name in recent weeks was taken by the Trump organization but that the company has not offered a reason. His company still owns the skating rinks, which is among his oldest businesses, but its the first time Trumps own organization has attempted to downplay the connection between the president and his businesses.
Trump has previously called one of the venues the greatest ice rink in the country.
. . .
One employee at the Wollman rink this week told a Washington Post reporter that the move may be an attempt to keep from losing customers who are averse to the presidents politics. In 2017, the New York Post reported that an elite private school on the Upper East Side canceled its annual ice-skating party after parents refused to send their children to a rink bearing his name.

(11,348 posts)the Trump organization ITSELF sees the name as toxic and bad branding. This is RICH! And Trump's reaction when informed of this? Golden!

(4,341 posts)It is, of course, a good move by the organization who recognizes the last name to be very toxic, but if people know that if they pay to ice skate there the creature will profit, I bet a lot of people won't go, so there should be a way to remind people who owns it.

(10,053 posts)Including its 500+ businesses set up to hide assets and create tax scams. I think the Trump name will be toxic for some time even after he is out of office (and may that happy day get here soon!).

Fortunately, there's the Hitler Gardens Rink nearby that doesn't care about being politically correct.

He used the renovation of the rink as a promotion and bragged about it for years. I'm SO glad they're finally taking his name off it. I always called it the "Wollman Rink".
I remember one evening, running around the "loop" in the park, I heard music. When I got near the rink, there was James Taylor giving a concert on a stage set up in the rink (there is no ice during the warmer months)! So I sat on a rock overlooking the rink and watched the concert for about an hour.

(19,204 posts)It should have been toxic from the moment it first appeared, but I'm glad it's finally happened for real. The Trump "mystique" (if there ever was such a thing) bubble has burst. People see Trump for the bombastic, criminal liar he really is. I'm hoping all of his businesses go down the tubes and he's forced to file for bankruptcy many more times. I want the 'Trump' name to be equated with bubonic plague, cancer, gonorrhea, Benedict Arnold, Idi Amin, and the heartbreak of psoriasis. I want he and his family to be ruined, destitute, shunned like a mass murdering, child molesting Mennonite.
Other than that I have nothing against the guy.

And if THOSE parents won't send their cosmopolitan kids to Trump's Wollman rink, Staten Island could be next...

But apparently he has iron-clad deals that only if the present owner sells the property, and even then there are stipulations, can the Trump name be removed. I hate having to have to walk under these big letters every time I walk down the main downtown street of my city.

(14,176 posts)This building could be in some families fortunes for a long time. Trump does not own the buildings he sells his name to. That is the kicker. He managed to build up his name and reputation as a very wealthy successful well-known celebrity, by his lying and bragging, to the point that he didn't need to actually buy buildings anymore. He sold his name to the builders. It "elevated" the building from a no-name building to a TRUMP building. It was worth it to the builder. Trump has made millions without lifting a finger, and with no skin in the game to lose.
And these agreements he's made with many many buildings all over North America, probably the world, are iron clad that his name cannot be taken off. City council in Toronto for instance have reacted to calls for their Trump building to be stripped of the name, and council has told them they can't. It would be illegal.
I am disgusted that long after he is shamed out of office, that name will lord over us mere proles for decades to come.
