US reviewing plans to move nuclear weapons from Incirlik, report says
Source: Stars and Stripes
STUTTGART, Germany The U.S. is reviewing plans to evacuate tactical nuclear weapons stored at Incirlik Air Base in light of ongoing tensions with Turkey, according to media reports.
The U.S. State and Energy departments were examining plans for potentially moving the weapons, which are roughly 250 miles from the Syrian border, The New York Times reported Monday, citing two unnamed officials.
The U.S. faces a dilemma over what to do with the weapons. Flying them out of Turkey risks further damaging the already troubled relationship with a longtime NATO ally, while keeping the aging weapons in Incirlik would mean leaving them in a country that Defense Secretary Mark Esper warned on Sunday was spinning out of the Western orbit.
While not addressing the nuclear issue, Esper said on Fox News that the arc of (Turkeys) behavior over the past several years has been terrible.

(17,931 posts)Turkey is and has never been Germany or Great Britain. I know the geography, but it's still too unstable to risk storing nuclear weapons there.

The Greeks will appreciate it.

(25,376 posts)We don't have bases in Greece.
I don't think Greece wants our nukes. (Based on historical relations)

(22,099 posts)That's stupid as hell. You never know when circumstances are going to change in a heartbeat--like now. These will be going directly to Russia. Maybe that was the plan all along.
And why is the ENERGY dept involved for gawd sakes? This is a military situation. Don't care if it hurts Turkey's feelings, get those nukes and our people out of there NOW!
Sanctions? That's the only thing tRump can come up with, after he completely screwed the pooch?

We learned not to put all our eggs in one basket one quiet Sunday morning of December 7, 1941 in Hawaii.
That said, there are other locations to move the weapons to keep Putin in his cage.
Poland, for example.
Yes, Israel.
And a host of other former Soviet satellite countries.
Ergodon has delusions of reforming the Ottoman Empire and the Caliphate. He's not our friend.

(25,376 posts)Our nuclear missiles have been there since the early 60s. They were removed as part of the agreement with the USSR during the Cuban Missile Crisis, but the bombs came back a few years later.
It's a cold war remnant. We wanted to remove them in 2005, but NATO didn't want it. Then there was talk in 2016, but we decided to keep them because of Iran.
We also have nukes in other countries:
