Turkey's Erdogan threatens to release millions of refugees into Europe over criticism
Source: CNBC
Turkeys President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened Europe with a flood of refugees if the continents leaders call the Turkish invasion of Syria an occupation during a speech to local lawmakers Thursday.
We will open the gates and send 3.6 million refugees your way, Erdogan said, according to Reuters, while speaking to officials from his ruling AK Party.
A Turkish offensive in northern Syria has been underway since Wednesday, with airstrikes and artillery fire targeting U.S.-allied Kurdish forces on the ground.
The operation began just days after President Donald Trump made a surprise announcement withdrawing U.S. troops from a part of Syria that had been reclaimed in a bloody and drawn-out war between the U.S.-led coalition and the so-called Islamic State. Trump framed his decision as one that would hand the responsibility of containing IS to the Turks.

Then they become attracted to sleeper cells.
It's like gang recruitment.
The cells pick up people who are isolated and need a sense of belonging.

(35,356 posts)Stark contrasts miss out on a lot of reality.
A reasonable number of the refugees are those who Syria kicked out of reclaimed areas. "We'll let the fighters leave and provide safe passage for the next 3 days" sorts of deals. More than a few wound up in Idlib, but a lot decided to pack it in. Now, once they, proud fighters for Sunni Islam in a Shi'ite-dominated state, find themselves not in a conservative Sunni environment but in Germany or France, they might decide to unpack it. Esp. if they feel humiliated, or feel that their coreligionists are humiliated.
This is not all; it may be less than 10% or 5%. But insisting that it's either 100.000 000% or 0.000 000% seems mistaken to me.
Newest Reality
(12,712 posts)I recently read a statement where he was asked about that and said, in effect, not our problem, Europe will get them.
Add that to the negative impacts of this. It is not easy to ascertain the subplot, (though there really seems to be several going on at the same time) but it sounds like a middle finger to the EU and tRump is vindictive to the max. Turkey is enabling that, as well, and so, I expect Erdogan to be emulating him. Notice that the threat is merely a response to criticism.
Trump, Putin and Erdogan are the players, so keep that in mind. What's to gain here is the issue.
