Republican anger grows as Trump disavows Kurds by saying they didn't help during WWII
Source: CNN
Washington (CNN)Republicans savaged President Donald Trump Wednesday for allowing Turkey to attack US allies in Syria as the President offered varying reasons for giving Turkey the green light, including the fact that Kurds did not fight alongside the US in World War II.
Turkey launched its military operation to flush Kurds allied with the US out of northeastern Syria sparking outrage in Congress, creating rare bipartisan unity about the risks to the Kurds, US national security interests, regional stability and the fight against ISIS.

As Turkish planes pounded Kurdish positions from the air and with artillery, CNN reporters on the ground in Syria reported smoke billowing from several large explosions as desperate civilians -- women, children and men -- fled the area on foot, some pushing others in wheelchairs, many crammed into the back of pickup trucks.
With humanitarian groups reporting the bombardment could displace as many as 300,000 people, Erdogan's top adviser told CNN's Christiane Amanpour that Trump knew in advance about the scope of the Turkish attack.

Again - Trump knew in advance about the scope of the Turkish attack.

(45,528 posts)does he know which side Turkey was on in that war? Turkey was solidly on the side of Germany providing them supplies and materials to murder Americans and other allies.
But then again, this dumbass is writing love letters to North Korea and doing whatever Russia wants from him. So maybe he's not allied with the American people either.

(1,525 posts)He has shown the world that he cannot be worked with. Hes not reliable. Hes not honest. Hes not trustworthy. He cannot be a good ally. He cannot be anything but an enemy. He is going to destroy this country probably if the Republicans do not wake up and turn him out of office. We need their help. This is not some fucking partisan game.
When this is over we will not have allies. Who will trust us?Even the Israelis are nervous now. No one knows what will happen next. We have just condemned our best ally in the Middle East to certain genocide. And Trump is babbling something about its OK because they didnt support us during World War II.
He has to go. He has to.

Main article: Single-party period of the Republic of Turkey § 19381950: İnönü (National Chief)
Turkey was neutral until several months before the end of the war, at which point it joined the Allied powers. Prior to the outbreak of war, Turkey signed a Mutual Aid Pact with France and Britain in 1939. After the German invasion of France, however, Turkey remained neutral, relying on a clause excusing them if military action might bring conflict with the USSR, which, after the division of Poland, Turkey feared. Then, in June 1941, after neighboring Bulgaria joined the Axis and allowed Germany to move troops through to invade Yugoslavia and Greece, Turkey signed a treaty of friendship with Germany.
Turkey was an important producer of chromite, which is a key ingredient in the manufacture of stainless steel and refractory brick, and Germany had limited access to it. The key issue in Turkey's negotiations with both sides was the sale of chromite to Germany or to the Allies. The Allies had access to other sources and mainly bought the chromite in order to preclude its sale to Germany. Turkey halted its sales to Germany in April 1944 and broke off relations in August. Turkey declared war on the Axis powers in February 1945, after the Allies made its invitation to the inaugural meeting of the United Nations (along with the invitations of several other nations) conditional on full belligerency. No Turkish troops ever saw combat.
