Los Angeles County seeks review of ruling on homelessness

Source: Associated Press

Updated 11:34 am CDT, Wednesday, September 18, 2019

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has voted to join an effort to seek reversal of a court decision that restricts efforts to bar homeless people from sleeping on sidewalks in Western states.

The board's 3-2 vote Tuesday coincided with the start of a California fundraising visit by President Donald Trump, whose assertions about homelessness include a claim that local and state officials deliberately exacerbate the homeless problem for political gain.

The vote directs county lawyers draft a brief asking the U.S. Supreme Court to hear a challenge to a decision by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals against the city of Boise, Idaho. The court ruled it is unconstitutional to arrest or otherwise sanction homeless people who sleep on sidewalks when there aren't enough shelter beds.

. . .

Supervisor Sheila Kuehl voted against the motion, saying in a social media post that it would "criminalize poor people who have nowhere else to go." Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas voted in favor, saying in a statement that the situation is "a state of emergency."

one reason my sister is moving from Venice after 13 years. She, at times, can't get in her front door and is tired of feces and garbage strewn across the public sidewalks. She's moving to Pasadena. She ssysvits becoming a health issue. After visiting 3 times the last 18 months. I agree. No idea how to fix the problem but long time residents are growing sick of it

Venice is not alone. LA is not alone. CA is not alone. The West Coast is not alone.

I was stunned by the number of homeless I saw visiting my family in Cincinnati this summer.

It's a national crisis, and Trump DGAF beyond Stigginit to the Libs. He'll never propose legislation, or even executive action, to address the issue.

Trump-votin' Rural America DGAF, either. Their homeless drug users are heading out to where they can survive, and cities are bearing the brunt.

...or maybe up in San Francisco?

Because if you don't, you have no idea how bad the situation has become.

Diseases such as typhus have already broken out in L.A.

I have had homeless people up on my front porch, blocking access to the entrance to my house, and I have had a homeless woman who was apparently mentally ill come up to my door, which was open but with a closed screen door, and start screaming - actually more like screeching - into my living room about how she "peed her pants! Gimme your pants!!" That happened twice, she came back again a couple days later, and both instances were relatively late at night and extremely disturbing.

Another time, about a year ago, my girlfriend and I were walking down a sidewalk in the Old Town area of Pasadena when a passing homeless guy spit a huge glob of fucking mucus into my girlfriend's face/eyes. As a result of that, my girlfriend had to go to her doctor to be tested for whatever kinds of diseases can come from such an attack.

I don't know what the solution(s) to homelessness are, but being a resident upset about the ramifications to the non-homeless from the effects of the ever growing numbers of homeless people does NOT translate to being a supporter of the fascist Trump.

And yes, I agree, Trump is a fuckin fascist asshole, so don't assume that being negatively effected by the homeless crisis makes us "Trump supporters," OK?

On edit: I almost forgot about the huge pile of feces that was deposited in the driveway inches from the front porch steps, which I had to clean up. That's not something you would like on your property, I'm guessing?

Why do you think trump is saying anything about homelessness? considering it's because of right-wing polices that have caused this.

...but it is now spiraling out of control.

In any case, nice attempt to divert from what I said in my post.

One of the big issues in L.A. is that the cost of housing has skyrocketed over the last 10 years.

I am paying 50% more for half as much space as I had before.

I am not sure which "right wing policies" caused the cost of everything to go up so extremely. L.A. and most surrounding areas are pretty liberal.

And knee-jerk accusing the poster you replied to with being a Trump supporter is a bullshit thing to do, and in my opinion is worthy of a hide.

I don't understand why this is happening in our backyard. We control California and Seattle which has some of worst homeless problems in the nation. We shouldve found a solution by now. We've already increased funding for treatment, increasing the minimum wage, decriminalizing drugs, made gains on equality, why isn't it getting better.
