Texas gun laws: Weapons will be allowed in churches and on school grounds
Source: CNN
A series of new firearm laws will go into effect in Texas on Sunday just hours after a shooting left five people dead in the western part of the state.
The laws will further loosen gun restrictions in a state that's had four of the 10 deadliest mass shootings in modern US history. They will make it easier to have guns just a month after a shooter stormed a Walmart in El Paso and killed 22 people.

Kris Brown, president of gun violence prevention advocacy group Brady, criticized the bill going into effect September 1.
"Many states took the opportunity in the last two years to learn lessons from the tragedies in Las Vegas, Sutherland Springs, Parkland, and the every day gun violence that plagues our citizens, and enacted new laws to protect public safety through expanded background checks and extreme risk laws," Brown said. "Texas lawmakers, instead ... doubled down on an NRA led agenda to encourage guns everywhere, no matter the risks and costs to safety."

Just hours after the shooting, apartment owners cannot ban guns and it is okay to pack heat at Church this Sunday.

(43,364 posts)when there is a mass carnage event, and every good guy is there with a gun, how do they know WHO to shoot at?
Abbott is on now, and he's making the shootings sound like a miracle. Touting fewer gun restrictions, prayers, and how happy the mother of that 17 month old is that her child is still crawling around. Seriously. Okay she's happy it's not worse, but please, the outcome is not a cause for celebration.

(17,390 posts)I guess it was only a matter of time before a Republican recommended that it is time to go full Beast Mode on the thoughts and prayers:
https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2019/09/matt-schaefer-texas-state-lawmaker-rejects-gun-control-hours-after-west-texas-shooting.html
State Rep. Matt Schaefer illustrated just how opposed to any type of gun control many elected Republicans are when he staunchly stood up against making any changes to current law mere hours after two towns in his home state were terrorized by a gunman who went on a random shooting rampage. At a time when the death toll of the West Texas mass shooting wasnt even clear yet, Schaefer went on a rant on social media making clear that the fact that a 17-month-old child was shot wouldnt make him think that perhaps some gun control could be beneficial. After all, he insists, the problem isnt the guns but evil.
Schaefer, in a post on Facebook and Twitter wrote that elected officials often hear demands to Do something! But he made clear what he wont do: I am NOT going to use the evil acts of a handful of people to diminish the God-given rights of my fellow Texans. Period. And his refusal to do anything includes things that many Americans support, including background checks and banning high capacity magazines. After all, nothing would stop a person with evil intent, he added.
So what will Schaefer support? More prayer, of course. YES to praying that God would transform the hearts of people with evil intent, he wrote. While he was at it he would also support fathers not leaving their wives and children and discipline in the homes. The answer is, of course, more guns: YES to giving every law-abiding single mom the right to carry a handgun to protect her and her kids without permission from the state, and the same for all other law-abiding Texans of age.
The problem is hardly guns but rather godless, depraved hearts, Schaefer wrote.
Every person needs a heart transformed by faith in God through Jesus.

Yes to guns for all law abiding citizens... That's exactly how these mass murderers are getting their guns! They usually didn't have a record, or whatever record they did have didn't prevent them from getting a gun...
Can I physically shove Jesus down his throat?

I am just a senior citizen trying his best to protect his home against intruders
who could finish me off long before the cops arrive....if I have a chance to even dial 911 and
explain the situation and give my address. I can use my 9 mm much faster.
If you are saying I have sick culture in giving me the best chance to survive, I couldn't disagree more.

The problem with laws promoting the proliferation of guns is that on a bad day any good guy with a gun can become a bad guy with a guy. This is why gun ownership is tied to higher incidence of domestic homicides. I doubt that husbands were purchasing guns in the first place on the off chance that they planned to shoot their wives.
https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/11/6/16612014/sutherland-springs-shooting-good-guy-gun
It could have been worse, but it wasnt thanks to a good guy with a gun. Thats what several conservative media outlets, from Breitbart to Fox News to the Blaze, are suggesting following the mass shooting at a Sutherland Springs, Texas, church on Sunday.
According to this narrative, an unnamed armed neighbor saved countless lives with his bravery after he intervened with his own weapon at the church shooting, pursuing the gunman who killed at least 26 people in Texas. The gunman was reportedly shot before he shot himself, Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt told CNN.
The reports go back to an idea perpetuated by the National Rifle Association (NRA) for years: As the NRAs Wayne LaPierre put it following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012, The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun. Basically, if more people are armed, they can stop violence before it gets bad or prevent it altogether.
If Texas is an example of this concept in action, though, it sure doesnt seem to work. Before another armed person intervened against the Sutherland Springs gunman, he had already killed at least 26 people and injured approximately 20 others. He managed to shoot more than 40 people before a good guy with a gun reportedly helped stop him.
