Kentucky Sports Radio host Matt Jones to form an exploratory committee on Senate bid
Source: Courier-Journal
Kentucky Sports Radio host Matt Jones is forming an exploratory committee for a potential U.S. Senate bid against Mitch McConnell in 2020.
Jones, a Democrat, told the Courier Journal he expects to come to a final decision on such a run after the election for statewide offices this November.
He said he will file the paperwork for the committee in the coming days, which allows him to raise money to conduct polling and research on a potential run but not engage in any overt campaign activities to ask for votes.
"I did want to move the ball forward because I am very interested in the race," said Jones, who has been considering a run for this seat since the beginning of the year. "And it's important for me to sort of take the next step."

We already have Amy McGrath. From a funding perspective, I'm not thrilled at candidates having to burn my cash in a Primary fight.

(9,291 posts)I rather have him then McGrath. I funded McGrath last time, I'm going hold back on funding until he announces.

(145 posts)I absolutely LOVE Amy McGrath and supported her in the Congressional fight with Andy Barr.
However, I do not care WHO beats McConnell as long as someone does.
Matt Jones has BIGTIME name recognition in the state and seems like a decent person.

(191 posts)She is good on paper, but terrible at politics. That's why Dems in KY are trying to get Matt Jones and maybe Rocky Adkins to run in the primary. Chuck Shumer knows nothing about KY and has no business picking our nominees.

(24,329 posts)Jones is well liked in Kentucky
Jones' positions on issues are well defined and people in KY know what they are
He is liberal/progressive
He would be a much more aggressive opponent for Mc Connell
Plus, since most people in KY know him (about him) there is less opportunity for Mc Connell to make stuff up that sticks

(24,329 posts)Jones and Mc Connell have been at each other for years
Jones' contempt for Mc Connell dates back around two decades
He's extremely well known and has a following from his sports radio and political talk
He is actually the better choice

(191 posts)He doesn't have the baggage that McGrath has. I hope he goes for it!

(2,785 posts)Feels like Jack Conway all over again a retread that lost in the last election. Yeah she ran a decent race for the house, but she still lost and winning State wide is a much bigger climb than winning Kentucky's 6th congressional district. Matt Jones may not have much of a chance, but at least he is a real liberal. He will not say stuff like "I would've voted to confirm Kavanaugh. If we want a moderate or conservative candidate then we should go with the one that has proven he can win in republican parts of the State which would be Rocky Adkins if he gets in the race Barring something improbable like Steve Beshear deciding to make another run at the Senate at his advanced age or Jerry Abramson deciding to make a run for the Senate at his advanced age the pickings are pretty slim it is either Jones,McGrath or Adkins.

(6,874 posts)and people hate him so, why couldn't he get primaried by another Republican? Heck, I'd change my registration just to vote in that primary - even if it was, god forbid, David Duke - just because having the seat is not the same as having the seniority - and we'd rid of Mitch.
Yes, I realize that's called "ratf**king." Desperate situations require desperate measures.
