Former Trump hotel partner charged with stealing luggage from airport

Source: Marketwatch

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Mississippi hotelier who had sought to open new hotels in partnership with President Donald Trump’s family has been arrested on charges of stealing luggage from a Tennessee airport.

The value of the suitcase and its contents taken Aug. 18 is reported at $2,599, while the bag and contents taken in July is valued at $1,300.

Chawla is the CEO of Chawla Hotels, a family company that owns 17 hotels in Mississippi. The Trump family gave up on the two new hotel franchises that Chawla intended to license in February, with Eric Trump blaming politics. A high-end hotel that Chawla is building in Cleveland and intended to franchise under a proposed Trump brand remains under construction.

Chawla received widespread attention after agreeing to open the Trump-franchised hotels, facing questions about tax breaks granted him by the state of Mississippi. The family has a longstanding connection to Trump — Chawla’s father, V.K. Chawla, sought Trump’s advice in 1988 when seeking to start a motel in Greenwood. Trump called the elder Chawla and suggested that he apply for a minority Small Business Administration loan. Dinesh Chawla and his younger brother Suresh have steadily expanded the business, operating nationally franchised hotels in a series of Mississippi Delta towns.

read the fine print on the hotel contract, usually posted on the back of the door. They're not responsible for much. Once you read it you'll never leave the room without everything you've brought with you.

I hung that when I was ill once and they came in anyway. The latch works but only if you are inside.

I usually stay in cheaper hotels and leave the sign on, never been bothered except on checkout day even when I ask for late checkout, I never stay more than 3 nights though

Greed.

Put him in jail.

Wealth should not get special treatment in the courts. Don't let him get away with whining about all the people he employs.

Even if the luggage he steals is worth $1000, he would be very unlikely to get that much for it (unless it's cash). I mean a $400 suit isn't worth much to someone unless it fits. You might be able to sell it for $200, but you'll probably get less.

More likely, it was the thrill of getting away with it and the idea of getting a mystery grabbag.
