Nadler: Judiciary panel could recommend articles of impeachment by late fall
Source: Politico
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler said Monday that his panel could recommend articles of impeachment by late fall, sketching a rough timeline for potential efforts to remove President Donald Trump just days after a majority of House Democrats signaled their willingness to support an impeachment inquiry.
"If we decide to report articles of impeachment, we could get to that late in the fall, in the latter part of the year," Nadler said on MSNBC.
Nadler is petitioning a federal judge to get lawmakers access to grand jury evidence collected by former special counsel Robert Mueller, and his committee is preparing to sue former White House counsel Don McGahn to compel his testimony in the committee's ongoing investigation into potential abuses of power by Trump.
"I think that we will probably get court decisions by the end of October, maybe shortly thereafter. We'll have hearings in September and October with people we don't -- witnesses who are not dependent on the court proceedings," Nadler said.

As Chairman Nadler has said more than once, and stated in a submission to the Federal Court, the impeachment investigation is on now. The House invested the Judiciary Committee with the full powers of Article 1 of the Constitution on June 11, 2019 - HR 430

(7,277 posts)The stronger the case the Judiciary Committee can put together, the more it will destabilize the GOP. And there's always the possibility of truly sensational evidence at one of the hearings.

(7,277 posts)no doubt Republican Senators voting to convict will receive 'special treatment', as the Nazis used to say. I'm thinking none those would be standing for re-election.

Now, if Nadler's committee reports articles of impeachment to the full house, then could Pelosi hold further hearings throughout primary season, delaying a final floor vote until, say, just before the GOP convention?

(15,645 posts)definitely no later than early November. The holiday season alone will eradicate the first 6-8 weeks of actual impeachment proceedings by the full House.
This is a good step -- announcing a timeline. I also think that we should all be contacting our Reps and Speaker Pelosi's office to encourage movement sooner than late fall (which in my mind begins NLT mid-November). We've got to have clear and concrete movement on impeachment by the time Congressionals go home for the holidays -- with the prospect of full steam ahead proceedings by mid-January at the latest.
Then hold House hearings and debate for the next 5-6 months before passing it on the Moscow Mitch and his cohorts to show their true colors just ahead of party conventions.
But what do I know? I'm just chomping at the bit and ready to string some folks up.

(26,737 posts)If he expects a court decision by the end of October... when does he expect the appellate and/or Supreme Court to hear the case and rule? I assume he'll appeal if he loses... I know Trump will.

That's certainly their current legal position... but it's an open question whether any judge will agree that it allows the chairman to declare that an impeachment inquiry has officially begun.
For instance - the key part of Article 1 powers is "all legislative powers". Would anyone try to claim that the House had just vested the committee (and/or the chairman) with all legislative powers? That the full House no longer needs to vote on bills? Of course not.

(7,277 posts)for the high crimes and misdemeanors referred by the House . The articles of impeachment, passed by the house are the subject of the trial. The House in effect is finding there is probable cause for conviction.

(4,341 posts)There is plenty of video to justify an impeachment for obstruction of justice, the creature obstructed justice on TV where he was recorded, that should be enough proof, I don't understand it. He has lied over 10,000 times, most of it is also on video.
I know, I know, I am frustrated about the pace of it, but this should have been started months ago, he obstructed justice when he fired Comey and later went on TV to say it.
