A meeting between President Donald Trump, the CEOs of some of the biggest airlines in the U.S. and Qatar Airways CEO Akbar al Baker devolved into "a lot of yelling," according to a report from NBC News detailing the meeting.
The group met in the Oval Office in what NBC News called an "'Apprentice'-worthy showdown." The outlet reported CEOs of American Airlines and United Airways were in attendance to air some grievances regarding what they believe are unfair practices by airlines in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
However -- and much to Trump's chagrin -- Delta Airlines CEO Ed Bastian was absent, according to NBC News.
"The president kept going back to it," a source who attended the meeting told NBC News regarding Bastian's absence. "There was a lot of yelling."

WASHINGTON The three largest U.S. airlines presumed that President Donald Trump would take their side in a ferocious, yearslong dispute with Persian Gulf-based airlines if they could just get his attention.
They got his attention, by way of TV ads the president saw on Fox News. But when Trump finally gathered executives from both sides of the dispute this month in the Oval Office for a heated, "Apprentice"-worthy showdown, he ultimately sided against them.
During an hour-long session, the president ribbed American Airlines CEO Doug Parker over his companys flagging stock price, asking why its so low at a time when the stock market is surging. He scolded Delta Airlines, whose CEO Ed Bastian did not attend, for buying billions in planes from the European firm Airbus while Qatar Airways is buying its jets from Chicago-based Boeing Co.
And he repeatedly harped on Bastians absence, questioning how he could be a no-show after his airline more than any other had been fanning the flames of the fight...................................

(11,949 posts)And he is pissed they bought the excellent new Airbus planes? And they are nice. I guess he is pissed that Delta saw the 737max for the scam it was? Trying to turn a sows ear into a silk purse. The 737 max is a typical example of the Wall Street rot that drives American business. Rather than design a new plane to meet the efficiency demands of modern air travel they tried to turn a plane designed in the 70s into a modern jetliner. Airbus may well drive them out of business over this. Well, that will never be allowed to happen. But a corporate restructuring is in order.
Nice knowing as long as I fly Delta I will never be on one of those death traps.

(16,448 posts)Sometimes theyre higher than a cats ass on international flights but Ive become a delta fan. I dont fly first class so I also appreciate their use of Airbus planes which are typically wider than Boeing aircraft and therefore usually have wider seats. The A330 vs. Boeing 767-400 is a good example of this. A380 vs. 747 is another.
The problem with the Max is they made the engines too GD big which is what necessitated all the software to keep it in the air, which ultimately got a lot of people killed. I hate the 737 anyway. Id rather be on an Embraer jet any day of the week.

(11,949 posts)However, I really like the 757. Never flown the Dreamliner, but going to Europe if I can get an Airbus I really like the old 767. Slower than the 777 but I think it much more comfortable. I never fly higher than comfort+ anyway.
I was forced to book on Allegiant recently. A funeral that, like always is last minute. Delta wanted over $800. I was quite surprised to be on a new Airbus 320. Seats were crappy, like oversized school chairs. No recline whatsoever! But it was less than a 2 hour flight.
Delta is just screwed. Even if the workout the 737max no one will want to fly it. And I question if it can ever be made truly safe. Those engines just dont work on that plane.

(16,448 posts)And dont like sitting next to strangers so I actively avoid the 787, 777 and any other aircraft with rows of seats in increments of 3 or more. I think the 787 is a 3-3-3 if memory serves. The 777 is 3-4-3 in some configurations. Those international flights are just too long to be rubbing up next to a stranger.
Recently I did fly solo. My hatred of the 3-3 configs on domestic planes is so bad that I chose an itinerary on United that included a 3.5 hour layover in Houston vs. one that had just an hour layover specifically so I could avoid the 737 and get on an embraer 145 instead. That aircraft is tiny and almost universally hated but it is a 1-2 config which was perfect for me flying solo.
