A man who was 11 when he and a friend gunned down a teacher and four students at his middle school in 1998 died Saturday in a car crash on an Arkansas highway, according to police.

Drew Grant, 33, who had changed his name from Andrew Golden and was living in Missouri, died when the driver of a Chevy Tahoe collided head-on with the Honda CR-V Grant was driving on Highway 167 near Cave City, about 100 miles north of Little Rock, according to State Police.

Grant and Mitchell Johnson, who was 13, set off a fire alarm at Westside Middle School near Jonesboro, Arkansas, on March 24, 1998, and shot at people as they fled the building.

Paige Herring and Stephanie Johnson, both 12, Brittney Varner and Natalie Brooks, both 11, and teacher Shannon Wright were killed. Ten others were wounded. At the time, the shooting was one of the deadliest school shootings in the U.S., until the massacre at Columbine High School in April 1999.

I posted this not so much because of the story of the shooter’s traffic death. The words in the article “the shooting was one of the deadliest school shootings in the US until...” are haunting. One of the deadliest shootings until the US rinses the blood off and repeats.

Snip-"Stephanie Grant, 29, and a 2-year-old child were in the car with Grant and were injured,..."

(I feel great sympathy for the child and Stephanie)

Snip-"Paige Herring and Stephanie Johnson, both 12, Brittney Varner and Natalie Brooks, both 11, and teacher Shannon Wright were killed. Ten others were wounded. "

Snip-"Grant applied for a concealed carry handgun permit in 2008, but his request was denied by the Arkansas State Police..."

Well damn, that murderer never got over gun humping..

In the application filed with the State Police, Grant presents paperwork to show that he has completed seven hours of firearms training required to qualify him for a permit to carry a semi-automatic handgun. In a section asking Grant to list all residences where he has lived in the past two years, Grant says that he lived in Ravenden from April 2002 to May 2006, then in Evening Shade from May 2006 to June 2008. In fact, Golden was held on state charges at the Youth Services Center in Alexander until his 18th birthday in 2004, then transferred to an undisclosed federal prison. He was released on May 25, 2007 — his 21st birthday. The only federal prison in Arkansas is in Forrest City.

5. He was tried as a juvenile. I read about this case a while back and looked into Arkansas law.

He was too young to be tried as an adult.

Given that he had multiple firearms issues since he was released from prison its clear he didn’t learn a fucking thing. With any luck he didn’t reproduce.

Hopefully the folks in the other vehicle will recover quickly.

From being behind bars from the age of 11 to 21. Not that there was any other option for what to do with a child who had done such a heinous crime.

Probably not the greatest endeavor for him. Oh well, he's dead.

Daniel Petty, 59 (who was the driver of the other car) died as well. His killing spree is finally over. He died 33 years too late.

Golden was born evil as his repeated attempts to get firearms after his too short jail term shows who he is.
