Groups sue Secretary of State over voter citizenship question
By Chad Livengood
Detroit News Lansing Bureau

Lansing — Fearing an "election day disaster in the making," a group of voting rights advocates, labor unions and citizens filed a federal lawsuit Monday to prevent Secretary of State Ruth Johnson's citizenship question from appearing on ballot applications this fall.

The plaintiffs want a federal judge to order Johnson and local election clerks to remove the question — "Are you a United States citizen?" — from the applications voters must fill out at the polls to receive a ballot, according to a copy of the complaint provided to The Detroit News in advance of its filing.

The lawsuit alleges Johnson is violating the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution after it was revealed some voters were asked the question and others were not during the Aug. 7 primary. The lawsuit also claims voter and election worker confusion over whether Johnson can ask the question could cause long lines at the polls in the Nov. 6 presidential election.

"As demonstrated in the Aug. 7, 2012, primary election, the citizenship checkbox will delay, and in some cases, hinder registered electors from voting. Those effects will be significantly magnified in the general election, and due to confusion and inconsistency in administration, they will apply to Michigan voters unequally," the lawsuit alleges.

Anything that interfers with our right to vote Should be challenged in a court of law. Also; penalities such as jail time should be applied if found to be guilty of plotting against the interests of the American people.
I'm sick of money fines; I want jail time for politicians who attempt to or who corrupt our sancrosanct freedom to vote.

MA asks the question at registration time. That means no delay at the polls.

MI ask questions at the polls, and selectively, thus slowing down voting in certain precincts and not in others.

7. If they only have the question in Dem precincts and they throw out ballots if you don't

answer the question because you missed it, then they will be able to throw out Dem votes. Same principle as butterfly ballots and hanging chads. Let Dems vote but don't count their votes.
