Jeffrey Epstein denied bail, will remain jailed pending trial on sex trafficking charges
Source: Washington Post
NEW YORK -- Multimillionaire and registered sex offender Jeffrey Epstein will remain jailed while he awaits trial on new allegations that he sexually abused children, a federal judge ruled Thursday.
U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman announced the decision at a hearing, siding with prosecutors after they and defense attorneys traded arguments for more than a week about whether Epstein could be released to some sort of home confinement.
Epstein, 66, was arrested on July 6 after landing at New Jersey's Teterboro Airport and charged with sex trafficking dozens of girls from 2002 to 2005. The case drew significant attention because in 2008, the jet-setting financier was able to resolve similar allegations by pleading guilty to just two state charges. He spent about 13 months in jail, with work release privileges, as part of the agreement.
The deal, which has been criticized as overly lenient, was approved by Alex Acosta, the former U.S. attorney in Miami whom President Trump picked as his labor secretary. Acosta resigned from the Labor Department post after the new charges were brought, drawing more attention to his handling of the previous case.

A federal judge on Thursday denied bail for Jeffrey Epstein, the financier facing sex-trafficking charges, rejecting his request to await trial under home detention at his Upper East Side mansion.
The judge, Richard M. Berman of Federal District Court in Manhattan, said Mr. Epstein, who owns property in Paris and has a private plane, would be detained in jail until his trial on charges that he sexually abused and trafficked dozens of underage girls in the early 2000s.
Prosecutors had opposed Mr. Epstein's proposal to remain in his mansion guarded by private security, saying he was seeking "special treatment" and trying to build his own private jail -- a "gilded cage," prosecutors wrote.
They had also argued that Mr. Epstein's vast wealth, said to be more than $500 million, would make it possible for him to flee the country if he were not held in jail.

(22,042 posts)First the lawyers denied to the Court that it had been used. When prosecutors proved that it had, Epstein's lawyers came up with a new story, that it was to hide his Jewishness from other Mideast countries.
Is there no end to the constant lying by these people?!

(51,623 posts)this week on her show. She said, "Keep your eye on this". It isn't really clear to me but I think she was saying that the SDNY started to investigate a specific part of the Epstein's crimes about 6 months ago but the prosecutors have pulled back and dropped it since then. Since the SDNY is federal Barr has control over it, even though SDNY prosecutors are usually pretty good at doing their job professional and staying objective. Rachel said that it doesn't make sense unless you bring Barr into the picture.

(16,786 posts)Goof for Judge Berman.
There was no way Epstein was going to be released on Conditional Bail with the evidence that has been discovered. He presented a dangerous Flight Risk. Freeze his assets wherever he has them.
Trump's association with this perverted criminal will surface because I have this feeling that there was more to this relationship that met the eye that will be discovered..

I just hope the trial can begin sooner than later. But we all know the Fed Justice system takes time.
In the meantime I wonder if Epstein will sing like a canary. Although he will be locked away forever he could angle for a more minimum security prison.

(3,205 posts)...about the best he can hope for is a Federal "country club' prison. And I think Barr will offer him that to get him to plead guilty before they get some of the victims on the stand, and keep his mouth shut.

(50,562 posts)He can thank Winston Shrout for his current predicament.
Shrout, thousand-year-old resident of Oregon, spent the last ten years giving seminars on tax evasion, and not paying taxes on the substantial sums of money he earned. After he was given ten years in a federal penitentiary, the judge was kind and gave him a few months to get his affairs in order. Now they cant find him.
As a result, anyone who poses even a slight flight risk (Epstein poses a severe flight risk...there are a LOT of rich people who have a vested interest in Epstein not being around to start naming his customers) is going to sit in a cage until the government is through with them.

Make sure all the women in the joint know about their sexual treatment of under-age girls and the atrocities they committed on them. I would bet a large percentage of the women in there were sexually mistreated many times before they turned 14 years old. You can bet your sweet ass they would gleefully get their just revenge taken out on these rich perverts who like little boys and girls.......

Trump will start claiming he's a liar and really bad person, but threaten him too using Barr and others. Barr has a lot of explaining to do if his father was also involved being a child predator using his services, and how he got his teaching job from his dad. Barr is in deep deep trouble with trump.

It's highly unlikely that this monster stopped being a monster after 2009. He probably just got better at hiding it, plus he had decades of accumulating "friends" in high places. It's time to take them all down.
