Man gets life plus 419 years in deadly Charlottesville car attack

Source: CBS News

An avowed white supremacist was sentenced to life plus 419 years on federal hate crime charges Monday for deliberately driving his car into anti-racism protesters during a white nationalist rally in Virginia.

James Alex Fields Jr., 22, received the sentence for killing one person and injuring dozens during the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville on Aug. 12, 2017.

Fields was sentenced last month to life in prison on 29 federal hate crime charges.

I suspect that his approval ratings would increase, because all the racists emboldened — by him — in their racism (i.e., all Republicans and those others who voted for him, KNOWING he’s always been a racist, and therefore agreeing with it), will rejoice that their own racist/NAZI sentiments can finally ‘breathe free’. Sigh.

Welcome to Germany, 1938.

I think his approval would increase if he pardoned Dylan Roof.

That said, however, I think he's enough of a coward to not do it.... yet, depending on 2020.

They might not ask if you're a US citizen. But could they

1) tell you you cannot fill out a census form unless you're a citizen
2) or more innocuously, require a government issued photo ID to get a census form

you never know what nuances these dudes have up their sleeves

I'm not saying the courts wouldn't block them.

But LOOK at the ICE roundups, the extent to which ICE is trying to convince people their
administrative order is a U.S. warrant. That's the sort of distortion or which they are capable.

And look at how roadblocks on the roads to voter locations deter blacks from voting.

I could not get a US census form last time around, because I use only a PO Box for US Mail. I had to meet with the local census official and explain this to get a census form. It was no big deal, but would create a lot of fear for non-US citizens even now.

I'm reminded of what Richard Pryor said about the prison inmate he met that was serving a "triple life" sentence.

"...that means if he die and come back, he got to go back to penitentiary!"

"Forget kindergarten...you git your little ass back in that penitentiary! You know what you did last time you were here..."

Such a young man to have turned to violence and hatred. To want to kill people, not caring who, really. What happened in his life early on to make him become a monster, or was he always that way?

All the hurt and misery and death he rained down on other people, who had lives to live, families to laugh with, children to raise, futures. Not to mention the monster's future. He could have had a reasonably happy life. He was only 22.

What a waste for everyone. But he needs to be put away so he never has a chance to do this again.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/05/us/charlottesville-trial-fields.html

"CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — In a courtroom this week in Charlottesville, Va., a chilling videotape played for the jury captured the voice of James Fields Jr., an Ohio man who attended a white nationalist rally here last year and crashed his car into a crowd of anti-racist protesters.

“Are they O.K.?” Mr. Fields could be heard asking a police officer after his arrest. Told that people had been injured, and that someone had died, Mr. Fields began hyperventilating and sobbing. The courtroom filled with the sound of his cries.

Many of those who were protesting the Unite the Right rally that day in August 2017 had spent much of the past year thinking of Mr. Fields, but had never heard his voice until they heard the tape. Some of the victims seated in the public gallery burst into tears, putting their arms around one another’s shoulders in an unbroken chain. Susan Bro, the mother of 32-year-old Heather Heyer, who was killed, shook her head: These were crocodile tears, she said later.

At the defense table, Mr. Fields cast his eyes down and stabbed at the table with a pencil."

It seems ridiculous that we should have to celebrate a decision affirming that propelling a one-ton motor vehicle into a crowd of non-violent people, and killing one of them in the process, is a crime.

But in 2019, in this America, it's a reassuring reminder that we are still a nation of laws. However tenuous the foundation may seem at times, it's holding. We are holding.

Extremists Look to April Anniversaries

Anti-government extremists pay more attention to April 19, which is the anniversary both of the violent end to the Branch Davidian standoff at Waco, Texas, in 1993, and the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City two years later by Timothy McVeigh, in a twisted act of retaliation for Waco. A variety of Oklahoma City bombing conspiracy theorists will be holding a two-day event, "OKC Bombing: A Day of Truth 10 Years Later," in Oklahoma City on April 19-20, 2005.

Grey paint with black wheels and blacked-out windows, seems to be a part of the white-wing cult's uniform.

Many of them also have the 3% or Oath Keepers, or 'thin blue line' US flag stickers, too.

And there's a lot of them driving around here in the authoritarian red hell of Colorado Springs.

Runts on wheels... Lil' shorty boys in their Tonka toys.

No, they're not all murdering people directly with their vehicles like this scum did, but they support a president who sticks children in concentration camps and who champions white supremacy, the same ideology this fiend murdered for. They're all the same.
