Speaker Pelosi Calls on Labor Secretary to Resign, Accuses Trump of Knowing About Epstein Deal Upon Appointment

By Reed Richardson Jul 8th, 2019, 11:36 pm

Speaker Nancy Pelosi called for the resignation of Labor Secretary Alex Acosta on Twitter and accused President Donald Trump of being aware of the 2007 sweetheart deal that the former US Attorney Acosta gave convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein when the president appointed him to the cabinet.

After the US Attorney filed new sex trafficking charges against Epstein, there has been renewed outrage over Acosta’s role in securing a lenient, 13-month sentence for the billionaire, which included daily work release that allowed him to come and go from the jail.

There seems to be a sense of the political risks of Acosta staying, as one of the president’s 2020 campaign spokespersons floated a trial balloon on Sunday that the “new charges” against Epstein could result in unspecified “significant changes” at the White House.

In February, Trump defended Acosta’s performance as labor secretary, whom he nominated to the job more than two years ago. He also disavowed knowledge of Acosta’s role in the Epstein sentencing deal, saying: “I know don’t much about it.” Pelosi’s Tweet did not include or link to any evidence that Trump knew about Acosta’s deal with Epstein when the president nominated him in 2017.

Isn't there a rule or standard that Acosta violates that makes him ineligible to serve? If not, then that's the mistake of our legislative branch, I suppose.

First things first. It's a good thing that congress didn't waste time and resources they didn't need to assuming that he would not resign, isn't it?

BTW - what do you think that congress could have "done" in the space of 24 hours, beyond taking the very basic first step of making it clear that they wanted him gone, and what they wanted him to do?

Demand pistols at dawn?

It seems as though you keep moving the goalposts to be disappointed with Pelosi.

Congress ALWAYS says that so-and-so (whoever is the latest criminal or perp or unethical person) should resign.

What matters is that Congress DO something that makes the person ineligible to serve. It's probable that he was made to resign because he's an election liability. Whatever the reason, it's good he's gone. But the issue of making these sorts of people ineligible remains. There may be laws that make them ineligible. I don't know. But if not, there needs to be.

She did. And lo and behold, calling for his resignation was all that was necessary. He resigned!!! With no further effort necessary on the part of congress!!!

How disappointing for you. She was right. She knew what the hell was going on.

But do go on and find something else to bash her for, moving goalposts to keep your low opinion of her stoked.

Facts are so overrated, aren't they?

Everything Pelosi does is wrong. Why, she's just like Boehner - I read it here on DU.
