BREAKING NEWS: Gas explosion rocks Florida shopping plaza, injuries reported

PLANTATION, Fla. - Police and firefighters are investigating an explosion at a South Florida shopping plaza that injured multiple people.
The explosion happened Saturday morning at a shopping center west of Fort Lauderdale in Broward County.
The blast sent large pieces of debris about 100 yards across the street, officials said.

(CNN) Police were responding Saturday to a major explosion at a strip shopping mall in the South Florida city of Plantation, authorities said.
News footage and social media video from the scene showed significant damage to the building.
There was no information on injuries.

(787 posts)Just glad more people weren't around, on a holiday weekend d especially. Even the Peters-University area in general is always busy with vehicle traffic as well.

(6,855 posts)I did not grow up in sunrise but Im familiar with plantation, sunrise area. Have worked in plantation since 1993.

(3,065 posts)Shook the ground and the car. I got the hell outta there. Yikes! I thought it was a plane crash. The mall is almost directly under the flight path for the airport. Debris blown all over University rd.

(6,855 posts)Plane crash would likely be anyone elses guess. One neighbor wrote that she thought she had been rear-ended by a truck. She was on university.

(6,423 posts)Grew up in a state full of bridges and some large tunnels, thinking about all the over/under passes you might see each week, recall statewide inspections with a ton of them in dire need of repair.
That was over 20 years ago and just 1 state.
We have to deal properly with cities in future flood wipe out spots, and move those whole communities to safety? Costly and inconvenience as excuses for inaction has to take a step off the accelerator and/or party bus and cave to pragmatism! Otherwise dooming a lot of random people in the future to horrific ends.
^same argument should be used on climate change, this inaction aint gonna hunt much longer as the pace accelerates?
