Americans' pride in US hits low: Gallup

Source: The Hill

BY MORGAN GSTALTER - 07/02/19 07:12 AM EDT

Pride in the U.S. has hit its lowest point since Gallup started asking about it in 2001, according to a poll released Tuesday, with less half of adults surveyed now saying they’re “extremely” proud to be Americans.

Seventy percent of U.S. adults said in the new poll that they were proud of be Americans, but 2019 marks the second consecutive year that fewer than half — 45 percent — identified as “extremely proud.”

The highest readings -- roughly 70 percent -- came in 2003 after the 9/11 terrorist attacks when the American public expressed high levels of patriotism, Gallup noted. Extreme pride amongst Democrats dipped to its lowest measure in the new survey.

Only 22 percent of Democrats responded with extreme pride, half of what it was before President Trump’s 2016 election.

This is the time of year we do the “patriotic schtick” at our summer concerts. Bleh. I was at a concert by another group and the whole audience stood up for the dreadful “God Bless the USA”. Double bleh. I have never felt less patriotic in my life.

although I loved the gigs and the people I played with I had other reasons.

I hated the patriotic gigs more and more as our country slipped toward the tipping point we see now. Mostly I HATED playing "God Bless the USA" and we played it in every single one of those bands. Then they started singing to it and the the last gig I did that was during Bush** they started putting their hands over their hearts (only those morons who for some odd reason thought it was one of our countries songs). It got so the sweating on stage far outweighed the fun of playing all summer.

Only a few people know this. The crowd expects the patriotic crap but I know he feels the same way I do about it. After the 4th the only patriotic thing we play is a medley of service songs (Anchors Away, etc.)

I used to fly a flag on my house. I use to go to parades on patriotic holidays. I used to get choked up at some of the music.

My patriotism started leaving when W. pulled out that bullhorn and millions of Americans thought killing other people and starting two wars was patriotic. It slowly left when the right wing Nazis in this country started co-opting patriotism for themselves.

I will not be watching the 4th festivities at all this year for the first time. I want my country back before I feel any patriotism again. I want to see more than 75% of eligible voters voting in the next election. I want whatever the GOP stands for right now at this moment in history soundly defeated in the next election by those of us who still care about our country's image around the world. I want those of us who truly care to start speaking our minds and not cowering at what the right wing might do to us or think of us if they find out we're Democrats. I'm not afraid of them.

I haven't flown my flag much over the years. When bush was in office, I wanted to fly it upside down, but my husband didn't want to piss off the neighbors. So I don't put the flag out, don't decorate for the holidays outside. I don't usually attend patriotic displays, and sure won't this year. I hope the orange turd has more protesters than fans at his ugly hypocritical self-aggrandizing and needlessly expensive display.

For the duration, I’ve replaced the Stars and Stripes with a Flying Spaghetti Monster flag. Seems appropriate. Still fly the state flag though.

14. This is NOT a military holiday!

This is a celebration of the cessation of hostilities and the creation of our Republic.

Yes it took a military to achieve, but civilians took us to the next level.

Quit wasting our money! The holiday is for trikes bikes and wagons, decorated with streamers and pinwheels!

You care to explain a tank to a child?
