Pence to help launch 'Latinos for Trump' in Miami
Source: The Hill
"The strong Latino support for President Trump and his policies will be instrumental in re-electing the president for a second term," Hannah Castillo, director of coalitions for the Trump campaign, said in a statement.
Vice President Mike Pence will attend a kickoff event next Tuesday in Miami for "Latinos for Trump," a campaign effort to engage Latino voters ahead of the 2020 election.
The event will take place at a Miami hotel one day before the first of two Democratic debates are held in the same city. Florida will serve as a crucial swing state in the 2020 presidential race, but the Trump campaign said "Latinos for Trump" will be a nationwide project.
Trump has drawn criticism for some of his comments and policies toward Latinos dating back to the 2016 campaign, when he asserted Mexico was sending "rapists" and bringing crime across the border. He has referred to Central American migrants as "criminals" and "thugs." He has threatened to shutter the border with Mexico and cut aid to Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras in an effort to curb the flow of migrants.

(21,636 posts)I doubt too many other Florida Latinos would give these bigots the time of day.
Right-wing Cubans do know how to put on a show:
But even among their own community, they're in the minority:
(from 2015): "68% of Miami Cubans favor closer U.S.-Cuba ties."

(21,636 posts)But I doubt he'll get even 50% this year.
One reason: the more radicalized exiles, who tend to be older, are being replaced by a much more moderate - and pragmatic - younger generation.

(7,754 posts)They should be called LADINOS for Trump.
In colloquial Latin American Spanish, a 'Ladino' is someone who, while just as disenfranchised as most of his fellow Latinos, sells out to either the local elite (most of whom are unreconstructed fascists) or foreign interests for self-gain.
Ladinos, in colonial Spanish America, were often used by the landed elite to manipulate and/or act as finks against the community.
They were often 'not quite white' and thus also felt they needed to go out of their way in their viciousness, to get a pat on the head from landowners (who actually despised them).
This mentality still influences Latin American politics to this day, sadly - and by extension politics in some quarters in the U.S. Hispanic community.

(160,542 posts)They capitalize on the intense tension between the very poor, darker complected indigenous and people of mixed ancestry, and the self-designated "ruling" class, the usually purely European descended oligarchs, who seem to fear and hate the poor. Have read and heard for years the level of that kind of racism is as virulent as racism was (is?) in the U.S. Old South.
They constitute a strange part of society, terrorizing the poor, and agitating against them publicly to do things for the elites who don't want to directly involve themselves.
Thanks for pointing out there's actually a term for them. Sounds as if there's a lot of history behind that word, all bad!

(21,636 posts)And just as much as discrimination is a problem (as you pointed out), having people turn on each other in hopes of some elusive reward from the elites impacts the region's politics as well.
And by extension it impacts politics for right-wing Hispanics were in the U.S. - a dynamic the GOP has long exploited among 'whiter' Hispanics, as you know.
In South America, the one I've most often heard being called a Ladino, in that pejorative ('sellout') sense of the word, is Chile's President Sebastián Piñera.
Ladino manos larga, they call him - a 'long-handed Ladino', in reference to his Pinochet-era fraud at the Bank of Talca which left thousands of depositors in the lurch.
He's a real statesman compared to Macri though. Macri may not be Ladino (he's Italian and Spanish, like many Argentines) - but he certainly sold his country down the river worse than any of them.
It'll take years for Argentina to recover from this debt crisis of his.

(704 posts)have always supported republicans. They are used to strongmen running countries and as long as they are killing "commies" they love it.
Fortunately, a vast majority of Latinos and Latinas are Democratic. More so after what is happening at the border and what happened in Puerto Rico after hurricane Maria.

If they cut their margins, they can win.
