Pelosi Statement on President Trump's Threats of a New Mass Deportation Dragnet

Source: Office of the Speaker

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement on the President’s threat to arrest and deport millions of immigrants, and to specifically target families:

“The President’s new threat of a mass deportation dragnet is an act of utter malice and bigotry, designed solely to inject fear in our communities. This plan revives the horror of the President’s family separation policy, inflicting its inhumanity on countless hard-working families across America.

“Since Day One, the Administration’s failed policies – from family separation, to child incarceration, to gutting asylum protections – have created senseless tragedy and heartbreak both at the border and throughout our country, and have turned America’s back on a decades-long, bipartisan understanding of the value of immigrants to our nation.

“The President must walk away from these cruel, ineffective and discriminatory policies, and work with Democrats to support smart, effective immigration reform that honors our values and keeps families together and safe. The President must also stop sabotaging good-faith, constructive and bipartisan efforts in Congress to address the root causes of the situation by blocking funding for humanitarian efforts in Central America.”

Many of my friends/relatives will be voting Blue no matter Who next fall (We're in our 50's and into our 70's, so of course we'll be voting next fall--That's if we can vote and have our votes counted). But friends I speak with are becoming less enthusiastic after that big blue Congressional wave last fall. I feel them 😐 These same friends are begining to become a bit worried about what they're hearing from their children and especially grandchildren of voting age and who are first time voters who are starting to see Dems as 'weak sauce' is what one friend told me her granddaughter is starting to call the Dem party. I'm not shocked by what this friends granddaughter told her, because @ 58, I'm starting to see too many Dems as 'weak sauce' myself unfortunately

well, yes, good statement, but all there is is talk, talk, talk, twitter wars ... it's getting to be bullshit ...
... sorry to offend but upon reading the statement I thought she forgot to add "we send our thoughts and prayers."
She is outraged, offended ... but will do nothing. Maybe there is some justifiable reason, maybe I just don't understand "the plan".
Set me straight if I'm missing something.

Pile another dead-end bill on Mitch's desk? See my post #10, below. Immigration reform has previously been beat to death many times, and that's one reason Trump knew he could get tons of mileage off it during his campaign and tenure.

It is important that she makes a strong statement in hopes it will catch some of our pond-water weak media's attention and reach a few of the public's ears, and to get it in the Congressional Record.

Doing that is also important in order to make a credible case against tRump in the future, knowing that many people's legal and civil rights will be violated during any mass roundup.

That's just about all she can do until budget time.

And, welcome to DU.....

... thanks, KY_EnviroGuy ... I understand some of the requirements to proceed with impeachment investigation, of which, I think some requirements have been meant ... and realize the need for the dems to make a strong statement ... but worry, every single day ... scared ... and so sorry for the people at the border, they have no protections ... and that sob Trump, Miller and the rest of the Trump Mafia sip martinis and sack the country ... I'm not the most patient person ... and very afraid that by the time the dems act, it will be too late. I guess I am also afraid that Pelosi might be blocking the start of an investigation, for what reasons, I couldn't say.

that humans are being mistreated and even killed in out name and using our money. Justice moves too slow in our eyes, especially when we see pain and suffering. And as you said, there's some with cruel hearts that simply do not care.

The real shame is that just like with war crimes, many who are executing these measures will never be punished and may even remain in their jobs. A major change in the administration can correct part of that difficult issue.

The other day, I saw an article in the UK's Guardian news site that had a memorable quote that hit home regarding my impatience with many things in big government:

(this) brings us to another book: David Runciman’s recently published How Democracy Ends, which is actually a more nuanced read than its title suggests.

Representative democracy was intended to work against our cognitive biases, dimly though these might have been understood at the time,” he says. “It puts barriers in the way of immediate gratification and slows down decision-making … That’s what makes representative democracy so frustrating. It is rarely gratifying. It is not meant to be.”

That's why for many bad situations, our only immediate relief may be nothing more that a good rant on DU.... ....

As wiser folks than me have said, the wheels of justice turn very slow.......

he will blame Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic House for blocking him from doing it. Don't forget the republicans are desperate to take back the house and will do everything they can to discredit the Democrats there.

Meanwhile some of our candidates are doling out promises as if Mitch McConnell doesn't exist and are saying little to nothing about taking back the Senate.

the shear irony that many, many Republican business interests have been built on and still rely on migrant and immigrant labor in this country. Devin Nunes' family farm still relies on it and some say it wouldn't survive without migrants.

Years ago, each time immigration reform came up in Congress, it was said each time by those in the know that meaningful reform would always somehow be blocked by Republicans to protect business interests.

I'm surprised tRump has been allowed to take this severe path on immigration by his big money boys....

If his impossible campaign bullshit pipe-dream idea of an all native workforce came true, we would probably pay 50% or more additional for roof replacements, landscape and concrete work, motel stays and many other areas with jobs most Americans no longer want to do. We'll also pay much more for our many parts of our food supply.

And then, there's the matter of tariffs.....

Posted on twitter by Elizabeth McLaughlin..Horrible story and must be told...if too many words here will post a second one..
I have just gotten off the phone with a friend who is a legal volunteer in Border Patrol facilities. Elizabeth McLaughlin

Don't look away. My friend has done two tours now volunteering as a legal advocate inside CBP facilities.
She passed along information about what is happening there that indicates that the Trump Administration is violating every basic human right, and is moving toward military "solutions."

So that folks understand the process: CBP has outposts on the border. Refugees seeking asylum travel hundreds of miles on foot, including with infants and small children, and turn themselves in at these outposts *on foot.* Here's what happened next.

CBP then transfers these human beings to a facility called "the Dog Pound." (Here, my friend started crying.) The "Dog Pound" is comprised of cages, outside and on dirt, with no protection from the elements. There are dozens of teen moms there.

There is no baby food.

While there, my friend saw a CBP agent take a baby from her teenage mother, strip the baby of its clothes, hand the baby back to the mother, and send them outside to the "Dog Pound" to sleep in the dirt. The "Dog Pound" has no running water, no covers, no tarp, no care, no safety from the elements. It is freezing at night, and deathly hot during the day.

Everyone is sick. My friend said she saw a baby on this trip that was so sick "I thought it would be dead by morning." Toddlers in the "Dog Pound" who had been eating solid food are given only infant formula. Moms are trying to start breast feeding again so their children don't starve.

These moms are dehydrated, sick, & have walked miles through desert with no water. CBP gives them nothing. It gets worse. Don't look away.

From the "Dog Pound," these human beings are moved to an area called "The Freezer."
The Freezer is kept at 55 degrees.

Some of the refugees who are moved there are still wet from their journey, and are put in The Freezer wet. CBP is keeping human beings in "The Freezer" for weeks at a time. WEEKS.

Including critically ill people, disabled people, sick children, teenage mothers with babies.
The floor of The Freezer is made of dirt or very rough concrete. There are no beds. Keep reading. From "The Freezer," refugees are supposed to be moved to ICE facilities that are designed for residential care. They have beds, food, bathrooms.
However, (keep reading) THOSE FACILITIES ARE EMPTY. ICE IS SHUTTING THEM DOWN. What our government is doing instead is moving refugees to MILITARY INSTALLATIONS.
The announcement about Fort Sill, which was used as a Japanese internment camp, is only the start.
So why would the government be doing this? Unlike ICE facilities, which allow site inspectors inside, there will be no inspection of military-run camps.
The military will be able to deny access to anyone it chooses. No media. No oversight. Lawyers will not be allowed in. Human rights monitors will not be allowed in.
The camps will also be protected airspace, meaning that no drones can fly over them to take pictures of what's going on inside. Trump administration is already committing atrocities at CBP facilities.
Border Patrol agents at the facility where my friend was working refer to these human beings as "bodies." Not people. "Bodies."
They are denying medicine, toilets, beds, food, shelter and clothes.
Continued: From "The Freezer," refugees are supposed to be moved to ICE facilities that are designed for residential care. They have beds, food, bathrooms.

iCE IS SHUTTING THEM DOWN.
What our government is doing instead is moving refugees to MILITARY INSTALLATIONS.
The announcement about Fort Sill, which was used as a Japanese internment camp, is only the start.
So why would our government be doing this? Here's why

These concentration camps (let's call them what they are) will be under the control of the Department of Homeland Security, but within the Department of Defense.

ICE facilities with beds and food are EMPTY, because the Trump administration is moving refugees into military-run concentration camps where they can do ANYTHING THEY CHOOSE without oversight, media scrutiny or advocate access.America is already perpetrating mass human rights violations, and this administration is setting it up so they can do far worse, in secret, under military supervision.
Military forces are already been shifted to CBP. My friend saw *coast guard agents* (read that again) working for CBP at this facility.
If Pelosi does nothing, there will be blood on her hands and the hands of every Democrat who refuses to act to end this administration's reign.
My friend has photos of the facility. This is real. It's America, right now. Why isn’t the media covering this??
