Trump throws support behind 'no brainer' measure to ban burning of American flag

President Trump threw his support behind a new effort to ban burning the American flag on Saturday, challenging a decades-old Supreme Court ruling that established flag burning was a protected form of speech.
All in for Senator Steve Daines as he proposes an Amendment for a strong BAN on burning our American Flag. A no brainer! Trump tweeted Saturday morning.

Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.) and Rep. Steve Womack (R-Ark.) reintroduced companion legislation in the Senate and House on Friday, which was Flag Day, to restore Congresss constitutional authority to ban the desecration of the United States flag.
Forty-eight states previously had laws against flag burning until the 1989 Texas v. Johnson Supreme Court decision ruled that the act was protected under the First Amendments freedom of speech clause.

(2,343 posts)Basically saying the supreme court didn't say you HAVE to burn your flag in that 1989 decision, but that perhaps someone shouldn't go to jail for a year if they did burn the flag.
"My daddy died fighting in Korea for that flag!"
"What a coincidence! Mine was made in Korea!"
"Your daddy didn't die for the flag. It's a piece of cloth.
He died for what the flag represents: freedom. Which
includes freedom to burn the fuckin flag."
His routine on flag burning should be used in court by any lawyer defending the right to desecrate the flag.

(12,586 posts)If as you're burning the Flag you're thinking that this country has been chosen by God to bring Christ's message to Earth, then it's okay to burn the Flag.
However, if you are thinking that our nation was formed by imperfect men, and that by burning the Flag you are drawing attention to some of those imperfections (racism, for example) in an attempt to change them and improve our country, then you are obviously a heretic whose deeds must be punished.
It's all about what you're thinking.
Also, it's not a big step from making burning the Flag illegal to making taking a knee during the National Anthem punishable.
It's funny how many of those who support an amendment to ban Flag-burning have avoided any kind of service to their country. I listen to right-wing radio occasionally and wonder how many veterans there are in their ranks?

(58,785 posts)with a big election coming up. This almost certainly means RW media will no longer refuse to cover flag burnings.* It also means that, with the satisfying incentives of attention and outrage restored, some of their idiot counterparts on the left will have reason to burn again.
* For those who don't remember, Fox and the rest stopped covering flag burnings and claiming that that free speech should be a felony at the time the Citizens United case was headed for the Supreme Court, seeking to establish that political donations were free speech protected by the First. So foreseeing the obvious of flag burnings while Citizens was in the news, McConnell and others just eliminated that blatant hypocrisy for opponents to argue. That's why, without Fox etc pushing outrage, the right had mostly forgotten all about it for the last decade.
I'm going to get out our flag and hang it up before traitors start displaying again and claiming ownership of patriotism.

Can these congressmen find something more constructive to work on? Something like firearm background checks, food safety, or carbon pollution. Do your jobs instead of grandstanding for the neanderthal vote.

(16,975 posts)as long that that traitorous p.o.s. is in the White House. I didn't fly it the whole time bush was in there, either. I wanted to fly it upside down but my husband discouraged it.
I also won't decorate outside for Christmas as long as we are a nation occupied by traitors collaborating with enemies.
If that p.o.s. had a thought in his head, if he had any goal or vision, even if it were evil, but he doesn't. I saw a picture of a moose that busted through a plate glass window of defunct pizza shop. The moose had no reason to break in. It didn't look good, it didn't smell good. but it broke in, causing damage for no reason. Then left. trump is like the moose, in a place he has no reason to be, causing damage for no reason, just mindless destruction. Beyond taking money and believing that people are for real kissing his fat ass, he has no concept of what he is doing or why he is doing it.

(1,480 posts)we drove past a shop that was flying a faded, weathered, tattered flag from a pole in its yard. The red stripes were literally orange! My WWII vet father couldn't understand my reaction of disgust. I tried to get him to stop so I could explain to the shopowner how disrespectful he was being. He wouldn't.
I would never burn a flag in protest, but I won't dishonor it through neglect, either.
When I got out of the Army, they had just switched from the BDU garrison cap to the black beret. Naturally, the berets were made in China.

Dear Senator ...
I'd be more impressed if you guys did one thing, anything, in your entire time in office to protect what the flag stands for, rather than to protect a cheap piece of fabric that was probably manufactured in a foreign country. Your party has lost its soul.

Biden proposes flag bill amid questions
Biden's bill would change the wording of previous anti-flag desecration laws in a way that he believes would pass constitutional muster, despite the court's ruling.

(430 posts)The FLade Code also states:
§174. Time and occasions for display
(a) Display on buildings and stationary flagstaffs in open; night display
It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
(b) Manner of hoisting
The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously.
(c) Inclement weather
The flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all weather flag is displayed.
So the tattered and torn and hardly recognizable in 60 mph redneck MAGAt's speeding pick 'em up's are all taken down at night, not flown on their chick-mobiles or are at least illuminated at night parked in front of Bubba's Rib, Hoof and Hogfoot Emporiam while they spend their Kavanagh Night liking beer, beer, beer?
I see so many faux patriots displaying flags in their front yards 24/7, unlit at night, in the worst weather (too much trouble to take it down and put it back up) yet bitching about today's DFHs...
I'd advise them to read the code but most can't or think they don't need to.
And when you point it out to them they do one of two things: tell you to fuck off, they're patriots and want to kick your ass or ignore it.
America: love it or fuck it up for your own beliefs.

A part of that idea of America is the concept of freedom of speech. Another more nefarious concept is to crudely score political points with bullshit legislation, meant only to stir up the less thoughtful among us. That's rethuglican's stock and trade.
