Russia says U.S. warship nearly caused collision in East China Sea: news agencies

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russias Pacific Fleet on Friday accused a U.S. warship of nearly causing a collision with a Russian military vessel in the East China Sea due to what it called dangerous maneuvering, Russian news agencies reported.
The Russian Navy was cited as saying that the USS Chancellorsville, a guided-missile cruise, had come within just 50 meters of the Russian destroyer Admiral Vinogradov which had been forced to take emergency action to avoid a collision.

TOKYO (Reuters) - The U.S. Navy said on Friday a Russian destroyer almost collided with one of its guided missile cruisers in the Philippine Sea in an incident it denounced as unsafe and unprofessional.
While operating in the Philippine Sea, a Russian Destroyer Udaloy I DD 572 made an unsafe maneuver against USS Chancellorsville, U.S. Seventh Fleet spokesman Commander Clayton Doss said.
He described a Russian assertion that the U.S. ship had acted dangerously as propaganda. The Russian destroyer came to within 50 to 100 feet (15 to 30 meters) of the Chancellorsville, he said.

(5,914 posts)Back in my day, we used something called SONAR (sonic navigation and ranging) to--among other things--prevent this sort of thing. In Grandpa's day, they had a dude up in a basket on the mast with a high-tech little instrument that they called a "spyglass".
This is almost as ridiculous as that apocryphal story about the US-Soviet space race and the Space Pen vs the pencil.

(57,600 posts)JUST IN: The Navy has released video of a Russian destroyer's unsafe maneuver against the cruiser USS Chancellorsville today in the Philippine Sea. The destroyer got to within 50-100 feet and Chancellorsville had to put its engines at all back full to avoid a collision

So this is nothing new and I would think this is no different and the Russian Destroyer is at fault but with Trump before a complete investigation he will probably issue an apology to his Puttie

(1,357 posts)Naval affairs expert Bryan Clark offered some clarity on just how risky this situation is, explaining that 50 feet to 100 feet for a destroyer is comparable to being inches from another car while barreling down the freeway.
"It's really dangerous," he told Business Insider. "Unlike a car, a ship doesn't have brakes. So the only way you can slow down is by throwing it into reverse. It's going to take time to slow down because the friction of the water is, of course, a lot less than the friction of the road. Your stopping distance is measured in many ship lengths."

(3,299 posts)I would like to see the relative ship positions, courses and speeds before this video began. Perhaps the Russian vessel was the overtaking vessel. On the other hand it looks as if the Russian vessel (from its wake in the still shot) appeared to turn away from the US vessel which had the Russian vessel on its starboard side. This has the appearance of a last clear chance maneuver to avoid collision by the Russian vessel.
"RULE 13
Overtaking
(a) Notwithstanding anything contained in the Rules of Part B, Sections I
and II, any vessel overtaking any other shall keep out of the way of the
vessel being overtaken.
(b) A vessel shall be deemed to be overtaking when coming up with
another vessel from a direction more than 22.5 degrees abaft her beam, that
is, in such a position with reference to the vessel she is overtaking, that at
night she would be able to see only the sternlight of that vessel but neither
of her sidelights.
(c) When a vessel is in any doubt as to whether she if overtaking another,
she shall assume that this is the case and act accordingly. (d) Any
subsequent alteration of the bearing between the two vessels shall not
make the overtaking vessel a crossing vessel within the meaning of these
Rules or relieve her of the duty of keeping clear of the overtaken vessel until
she is finally past and clear.
RULE 15
Crossing Situation
When two power-driven vessels are crossing so as to involve risk of
collision, the vessel which has the other on her own starboard side shall
keep out of the way and shall, if the circumstances of the case admit, avoid
crossing ahead of the other vessel.
