Peterborough by-election result: Brexit Party fails to win first MP as Labour retains seat

Source: The Independent

Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party has failed to secure its first parliamentary seat as Labour snatched victory in the Peterborough by-election.

Unite activist Lisa Forbes was elected with a majority of 683 in the marginal seat vacated by disgraced MP Fiona Onasanya, who was sacked by her constituents for lying over a speeding offence.

Labour’s victory comes as a blow to Mr Farage’s ambitions, as his recently-formed party sought to build on its strong European election performance to win a foothold in parliament.

The constituency, which voted overwhelmingly for Brexit in 2016, had been squarely in the party’s sights but appears to have been defeated by Labour’s more established ground campaign.

The media has been playing a narrative that the Brexit Party was going to storm it.

This is good news. The disruptor failed to disrupt much to every ones surprise!

In fact, the left clearly has the upper hand in Europe as a whole, and is in a pretty good position as far as making a real comeback in Britain.

His comment that their national health service would be part of any trade deal should scare the pants off all Brits. The result would be takeover by US insurance and drug companies, who could then cut service and raise prices. Trump’s idea of a great trade deal is to royally screw any trade partners.

If GB leaves the EU, they will have very little clout for gaining trade advantage, and Trump is just waiting to for e them to take more of our disgusting food product like chicken washed in chemicals and foods full of Roundup. The Brits may be forced to buy more soy products since China has formed new supply chains with other countries.

Having to set up a trade deal with Trump in charge should scare the Brits into staying in the EU. Any trade deal would most likely also involve big concessions for Trump to build luxury hotels throughout the EU and for Ivanka to be given valuable trademarks.

are likely partial explanations.

The scope for tactical voting in the Euro elections was very vague and unpredictable, but at Westminster, it's a factor that's kept Farage and UKIP out of office apart from a couple of by-election glitches over the years, and the Brexit Party won't be immune from it. The Tory vote held up better than expected (it was a Tory seat till 2017, when Labour won it), which no doubt helped Labour, but the Lib Dems seem to have suffered.

Now we have to listen to Farage & Co. whining pitifully all over the media. Oh joy.

and considerably better than their 2015 and 2017 results. They just didn't get any "we're the Remain vote" boost here.

but that didn't pan out in this by-election, though they may have taken some significant number of votes that affected the result. The Tories were obviously the bigger losers, though not to the extent some projected.
