U.S. to levy tariff on imported Mexican tomatoes in trade spat

Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Commerce Department said on Tuesday it will begin imposing a 17.5 percent tariff on imported Mexican tomatoes, but said it is optimistic that a deal can be reached to extend a 2013 agreement that suspended a U.S. anti-dumping investigation.

“The Department of Commerce remains committed to ensuring that American domestic industries are protected from unfair trading practices,” Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross said in a statement. “We remain optimistic that there will be a negotiated solution.”

The tariff will go into effect in about a week.

Mexican Deputy Economy Minister Luz Maria de la Mora said Monday that U.S. consumers will face financial impacts after they could not reach agreement.

I told the checker (I live in southern CA) that all the prices have gone up. He said he was just told that stuff from Mexico was going to go up even more really soon so be on the lookout. What timing! He warned me YESTERDAY!

Thank you very much, but I'll wait for the genuine locally grown tomatoes that actually have flavor.

could result in another Caravan, just in time for the election so he can ratchet up the fear. And when voters figure out his tariff increased immigration, he'll tell deplorables he did it so Mexico would pay for the wall.

are they hand-picked. Florida tomato growers are up in arms because imported Mexican tomatoes are higher quality, and consumers are voting with their taste buds and their wallets. Trumpie is bowing to the Florida Repug tomato growers with an eye on 2020.

And subsequently they taste like crap.

I'll stick with my 20 open-pollinated tomato seedling of my own breeding. Now that I built a greenhouse I can keep them alive and bearing until mid-Nov up here in Minnesota.
