UPDATE: Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to resign effective May 11
Source: Washington Post
Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein, whose tumultuous two years as the second-highest law enforcement official in the government was marked by battles over the special counsel probe of President Trump, submitted a resignation letter Monday indicating he will leave the job in two weeks.
Rosensteins departure had been expected since the beginning of the year, but the date was repeatedly pushed back as special counsel Robert S. Mueller III wound down his investigation and compiled a report detailing his findings.
Since his first days on the job, Rosensteins role in the Trump administration has been controversial, from the firing of then-FBI Director James B. Comey in May 2017 to the conclusion reached by Rosenstein and Attorney General William P. Barr that the president had not committed obstruction of justice.
In his resignation letter to Trump, Rosenstein praised the president for his personal charm and policy goals. As I submit my resignation effective on May 11, I am grateful to you for the opportunity to serve; for the courtesy and humor you often display in our personal conversations; and for the goals you set in your inaugural address: patriotism, unity, safety, education, and prosperity, because a nation exists to serve its citizens, Rosenstein wrote.

Rosensteins leaving has long been expected. His nominated successor, deputy transportation secretary Jeffrey Rosen, is awaiting Senate confirmation.
This is a developing story. It will be updated.

(8,200 posts)I will always remember him standing behind the scum bag Attorney General providing him with his immoral support for the pathetic attempt to whitewash the Mueller report. The last and only honest Republican patriot was stopped with a bullet from Booth's gun.

(11,257 posts)I can't believe anyone here - me included - thought that he'd do the right thing with respect to Mueller.

Rosenstein, in my thinking, was just responding to Mueller's requests, answering questions, etc. His job was not to analyze or summarize the report.
He's 2nd banana. So even tho he may have signed the AG summary, I'm not sure he had a choice, if he wanted to keep his job.
He DID appoint Mueller. He DID agree to Mueller's requests to forward indictments to other jurisdictions re Cohen and Manafort and others. So he wasn't all bad.

(33,643 posts)It was mostly self-aggrandizement about what a great job he himself did as DAG.
Most of the resignation letters to Trump have been much more fawning, frankly. Even Sessions' was.

(33,643 posts)It's what I would call 'damning with faint praise' ... if you go back and read Sessions' letter it doesn't really even compare on the obsequious scale. Even though Sessions was insulted the whole time, and fired ... he still showed up for IQ45 with 37 pieces of flair.
Rod here did what I would call 'the bare minimum'.

(7,367 posts)Interesting that he closed with that, given that Barr's manipulation of the news cycle is largely responsible for the wide perception that Trump was cleared in the Mueller report.

This entire thing was mishandled; he wants to get out of dodge before the IG can take his pension.

(6,203 posts)I have mixed feelings about this guy.
He did protect Mueller, I admit that.
But he seems such a weak, self-serving kind of guy.
My biggest concern is what kind of swamp creature Trump will put in his place.
