April 27, 2019 (Poway, CA)--A suspect is in custody following multiple shootings at the Chabad of Poway synagogue, the San Diego Sheriff reports. According to the synagogue's website, a Passover celebration was slated for 11 a.m.

The Sheriff's office reported shortly after noon that it was investigating reports of a man with a gun in the vicinity of the synagogue in the 16000 block of Chabad Way. The Sheriff's Poway office later confirmed injuries. ECM news partner 10 News reports that at least four victims have been transported for medical treatment. The injured have been taken to Pomerado Medical Center, the Sheriff confirms.

UPDATES: An older woman has died and three others were injured in a shooting today at the Chabad of Poway synagogue, Sheriff Gore confirmed in a news conference this afternoon. The attack occurred during a Passover celebration.

ECM news partner 10 News reports that Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, suffered hand injuries. Two men and a juvenile girl were also injured; all are in stable condition.

A white male, 19, from San Diego is in custody after he called authorities to surrender. He used an AR-type assault weapon, according to Sheriff Gore. He was arrested in nearby Rancho San Diego. No motive has yet been disclosed.

NBC 7 reports that multiple sources confirm the suspect is John T. Earnest, who published a manifesto at 10 a.m. on Reddit threatening to live-stream the shooting in Poway. In a rant filled with racist remarks and Bible quotes, he also claimed credit for arson at an Escondido mosque a month ago. The killer stated that he was inspired by the recent deadly attack on a New Zeland mosque and by shootings at a Pittsburgh synagogue last year.

So sickening to see this hate here in our community in San Diego County.

There are reports in other media that two of the victims are children. The rabbi reportedly sustained a hand injury but we're working to confirm those details.

NOTE: As local media in San Diego we are updating the story as more info appears. The latest updates include quotes from the press conference held by Sheriff Gore and other officials.

It now appears the shooter was a Christian extremist who also claimed credit for a mosque fire.

Sadly one is a 10-year-old girl with shrapnel in her face.
Another is the rabbi, who has hand damage; other media reports he may lose a finger.
I don't have details on the third person injured, other than that it's a man.

I am concerned about my brother who is Jewish and lives in Poway, and has not returned my calls today. He's not that religious he's about the age of the injured man, who's ID has not been released. I hope he didn't go to the Passover service.....will make more inquiries tomorrow if I don't hear from him.

to go to the canyons and roust out the homeless migrants. There has always been hate in San Diego.

It started with the missions were native Americans were slaves after the Spanish ships stopped coming to west coast. The padres and soldiers brought disease and desolated the indigenous population.

The good people of San Diego would go to the water stations in the desert and dump the water
on the ground.

The Philipieno people in Cula Vista were treated poorly also.

In order to become one of his followers, you first had to be Jewish. So if you are anti-Semitic in any way, then YOU ARE NOT CHRISTIAN!!!! You are a barbaric, misanthropic asshole who needs to be separated from the rest of society for the rest of your life. Period!

My family and I used to live in Escondido and visited this synagogue at one time. I firmly believe that there's more love than hate in the world, but the hate gets all the press!

ECM is based in San Diego where the shooting occurs. The site also operates the region's wildfire and emergency updates, and has the fast track to information on breaking emergencies such as this.

To say they're not credible, you would have to also be discrediting the Society of Professional Journalists and San Diego Press Club which have awarded the site the top awards in the professional regionally including Best Investigative Reporting, the Sol Price Award for community reporting, the James Julian Memorial journalism prize (3 times), and the Gloria Penner award for political reporting, to name just a few. All of that can be verified in the "about us" section on the site which lists the awards.

The author of this piece has won over 350 journalism awards, including national awards on issues such as problems with our voting machines that helped lead to major reforms including California banning paperless Diebold voting machines.

The OP does not "own" the site, which is a nonprofit in good standing.

earlier this evening. They were discussing this shooting, the Sri Lanka massacres, the New Zealand mosque shootings, and other mass hate crimes. They discussed, quite openly and matter of factly, without anger or dissension, how these things had become worse since Trump took office. We need to do more of that in our media, instead of the mealy mouthed discussion we are getting now.

To their credit, they discussed how this was a worldwide phenomenon. It frightened the participants in the discussion, who said it was like what happened in the 1930s. They still put a lot of the blame on Trump, which I think is accurate.
