Trump camp descends on Pennsylvania as alarms grow over 2020
Source: Politico
Senior Trump 2020 advisers are headed to Harrisburg on Wednesday to meet with Pennsylvania GOP officials amid mounting concerns about the presidents prospects in the critical battleground state.
Trump's campaign is moving to shore up the state after 2018 midterm elections that saw Republicans get blown out in races up and down the ballot. Compounding the situation is a state party organization riven by turmoil and infighting.
The private meeting, confirmed by a half-dozen party officials, underscores the high stakes for the president in the state. Trump won Pennsylvania by less than 1 percentage point in 2016, and reelection aides view the states 20 electoral votes as crucial to his 2020 hopes. Pennsylvania also has symbolic significance: In 2016, Trump geared his campaign toward the states large proportion of blue-collar voters, many of whom had traditionally voted Democratic.
The Trump contingent is expected to include political director Chris Carr, who is orchestrating the campaigns national field deployment, as well as Bill Stepien and Justin Clark, who are overseeing outreach to delegates and state party organizations. Republican National Committee officials are also expected to attend.

Out-of-staters have to go door-to-door to get every single non-Trump vote possible.

(46,115 posts)BTW, my second cousin used to be the Lt. Governor of Pennsylvania and he's a (non-Trump) Republican. I'm hoping he can explain the mindset of Pennsylvanian republican voters to help me persuade them to either vote democratic or to stay home.

(23,343 posts)Western PA seems to be redder. I don't know why, because unions have been pretty strong in that area - mine workers, steel workers, teamsters, etc. Western PA should be solid blue.

(3,245 posts)I think this will be true for all the swing states that in 2016 somehow swung Trump's way. Pa, Mich, Wisc, Ohio etc. will get alot of scrutiny this election given what we now know from the Mueller report that the polling data Manafort gave to Derapaska appears to have centered on these states.

(15,286 posts)Dems continue to win special elections since then, most recently flipping a state senate seat. I can't say this often enough, in 2016, Republicans held a super majority in the state senate, 34-16. Now there edge is 26-22 with 2 open seats to be decided during next month's primary. I think the odds are against picking up the 2 open seats in SD33 and SD41. SD33 is primarily Adams and Franklin Counties with a bit of York and Cumberland thrown in. This is generally pretty conservative, but Gov Wolf, Lt Gov Fetterman and state rep Mike Sturla are from in and around that area, so a flip is not impossible. SD41 is mostly Armstrong and Indiana counties. There are many hard-core Trumpers in it, but it's also pretty economically depressed, so a Dem running on a populist message might have a chance.
I'll also point out that voters in Trump areas are dying off every day.

I think that people here in the blue areas of PA are pissed the F off. I think the "win" here in 2016 was by 44,000 votes (too close for comfort in upstate PA and a flip in Erie) and that will need to be doubled or tripled the other way to keep the tomfoolery away.
