(51,607 posts)but after Israel's recent election I doubt it. They can get away with calling a party Social Democratic when this country throws a fit over the word "socialist". Maybe we should go with "Center -Left"....not as scary.

(19,988 posts)apparently played a big role in propelling the Finns party into a very close 2nd place. I suppose some see their generous welfare programs as part of a social contract that they pay into their whole lives and benefit from when needed, while they may view immigrants as not having contributed much to the contribution side of the contract while still enjoying the benefits.

(1,832 posts)It is very difficult for newcomers to get in, what ever country they are from - except from fellow Nordic countries. There is still less than seven percent new foreigners, including any country of origin - most are from Europe. But this is very new to Finland through the last fifteen years - after the end of being a too close neighbor to Soviet.

(19,988 posts)I think I, too, would try to be very careful about whom I allowed to immigrate. Overall quality of life can too easily be eroded by trashy moneygrubbers (like Trump) and others who haven't developed much appreciation for equality, justice, and civility.
