Geoffrey Rush defamation case: actor set to win millions from News Corp
Source: The Guardian
News Corp has been ordered to pay more than $850,000 with the prospect of millions more to Geoffrey Rush after a court found Sydneys Daily Telegraph defamed him by alleging he engaged in inappropriate behaviour during a theatre production of King Lear.
The reports were in all the circumstances, a recklessly irresponsible piece of sensationalist journalism of the worst kind, judge Michael Wigney told the Sydney court on Thursday, estimating that Rushs earnings as an actor would suffer for as long as two years following the vindication of his reputation.
...
Wigney said he was acutely conscious of and had regard to the difficulties and disadvantages that are often encountered by complainants in cases involving allegations of sexual harassment and that Norvill had essentially been dragged into the spotlight by Moran and the Daily Telegraph.
...
He said Norvills evidence was not only uncorroborated but contradicted by ... the evidence of Rush, [director Neil] Armfield, [and cast members Robyn] Nevin and [Helen] Buday.

There are more damages to come, based on an assessment of work that Rush is likely not to get in the next few years.

(49,011 posts)The media have played up horse race mentality in their audience for profit during political cycles.
They like to damage the front runner. Over the years leading up to and including 2016 they damaged Hillary Clinton's chances by giving RepubliCONs and tRump lots of free media overblowing something about emails and before that Benghazi. Oh, and the non-existent illnesses that were going to kill her before the election.

(37,648 posts)I learned about the yellow rags in a journalism course I took long ago. They have existed for many years. They are not main stream, and are not journalism. They're gossip rags, often not based in truth or facts. Conspiracy theories, made up stories (alien born in Kangaroo pouch!), no ethics, harmful gossip about celebrities (celebrities are considered fair game because they are public figures, and are allowed to be written about in ways that ordinary citizens can't be).
The Daily Telegraph isn't a respected news organization, is it? I'm unfamiliar with it. If it's legit news, it should have known better. It would win any lawsuit, if it had facts to back up the story. The defense to any story is truth.
