Sudan's Bashir steps down, government sources say

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has stepped down and consultations are under way to form a transitional council to run the country, government sources and a provincial minister said on Thursday.
The minister of production and economic resources in North Darfur, Adel Mahjoub Hussein, told the Dubai-based al-Hadath TV that there are consultations to form a military council to take over power after President Bashir stepped down.
Sudanese sources confirmed the report and told Reuters Bashir was at the presidential residence under heavy guard.
The military will make an announcement soon, state television said as troops were deployed in Khartoum.

Ahmed Awad Ibn Auf, who is also an army general, said political detainees would be released but that a state of emergency would continue for three months and that a curfew from 10pm to 4am would be enforced for at least a month. All ports will remain closed for 24 hours.

For a long time, examining whats going on in the state and the corruption that is going on, Ibn Auf said. The poor are poorer and the rich are still rich and there are no equal chances for the same people.

(101,322 posts)Defence Minister Awad Ibn Auf announced his decision on state TV. He named as his successor Lt Gen Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan.
It comes after protesters refused to leave the streets, saying the coup leaders were too close to Mr Bashir.
The army has said it will stay in power for two years, followed by elections.
