Trump's sister just resigned as a judge -- thwarting the misconduct probe examining family tax fraud

Source: Alternet/New York Times

written by Cody Fenwick April 11, 2019

We don’t hear about her much, but President Donald Trump’s older sister, Maryanne Trump Barry, is a notable figure in her own right. She’s been a federal judge on the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals, where she was appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1999.

And she just did something very suspicious.

At 82, she’s been an inactive senior judge on the court not hearing cases, according to a New York Times report Wednesday night. But she just stepped down from her position, officially retiring.

The reason? It’s not certain, but it appears to be prompted by the Times’ previous investigative story that “the Trumps had engaged in dubious tax schemes during the 1990s, including instances of outright fraud, that greatly increased the inherited wealth of Mr. Trump and his siblings.”

The report noted: “Judge Barry not only benefited financially from most of those tax schemes, The Times found; she was also in a position to influence the actions taken by her family.”

Retiring as a Judge, Trump's Sister Ends Court Inquiry Into Her Role in Tax Dodges

President Trump’s older sister, Maryanne Trump Barry, has retired as a federal appellate judge, ending an investigation into whether she violated judicial conduct rules by participating in fraudulent tax schemes with her siblings.

The court inquiry stemmed from complaints filed last October, after an investigation by The New York Times found that the Trumps had engaged in dubious tax schemes during the 1990s, including instances of outright fraud, that greatly increased the inherited wealth of Mr. Trump and his siblings. Judge Barry not only benefited financially from most of those tax schemes, The Times found; she was also in a position to influence the actions taken by her family.

Judge Barry, now 82, has not heard cases in more than two years but was still listed as an inactive senior judge, one step short of full retirement. In a letter dated Feb. 1, a court official notified the four individuals who had filed the complaints that the investigation was “receiving the full attention” of a judicial conduct council. Ten days later, Judge Barry filed her retirement papers.

The status change rendered the investigation moot, since retired judges are not subject to the conduct rules. The people who filed the complaints were notified last week that the matter had been dropped without a finding on the merits of the allegations. The decision has not yet been made public, but copies were provided to The Times by two of the complainants. Both are involved in the legal profession.

Once a judge meets age and service requirements he or she may retire and will then earn his or her final salary for the remainder of his or her life, plus cost-of-living increases.

As of 2018, federal district judges are paid $208,000 a year, circuit judges $220,600, Associate Justices of the Supreme Court $255,300 and the Chief Justice of the United States $267,000. All were permitted to earn a maximum of an additional $21,000 a year for teaching.[3]

There isn’t an honest one anywhere. Well, maybe Tiffany and Barron...but it’s early days. Time will tell.

She's the one who's kept to herself and stayed away from publicity. She's far smarter than her younger brother. Not that the bar is too high for that.

She's probably really pissed he's caused her this trouble.

continue. Lots of downside here for her and other trump family members if the tax fraud can be proven. I am sure state and local district attorneys are pursuing
