EXCLUSIVE - Romney on Debates: Obama Will 'Say Things That Aren't True'
Source: Yahoo! News
With the first Presidential debate less than three weeks away, Mitt Romney is spending lots of time getting ready behind closed doors. In his first comments on that debate prep, he told me that Sen. Rob Portman is a tough stand-in for a President who basically lies in debates.
"I think the challenge that I'll have in the debate is that the president tends to, how shall I say it, to say things that aren't true," Romney said. "I've looked at prior debates. And in that kind of case, it's difficult to say, 'Well, am I going to spend my time correcting things that aren't quite accurate? Or am I going to spend my time talking about the things I want to talk about?"
The former governor told me he's tempted to use Ronald Reagan's famous line against President Carter in a 1980 debate, "There you go again" - the same line that Bill Clinton turned on Romney and the Republicans at the Democratic convention in Charlotte.
When I asked if Portman was crushing him in early debate preps, Romney was coy.
"I'm not revealing those kind of secrets. But I will never debate Rob Portman again," Romney said with a laugh.

There are two basic key components to successful inoculation. The first is threat, which provides motivation to protect one's attitudes or beliefs (Pfau, 1997a). Refutational preemption is the second component . Refutational preemption is the cognitive part of the process. It is the ability to activate one's own argument for future defense and strengthen their existing attitudes through counterarguing. (Pfau, 1997)

(550 posts)even the limp dick mass media are insinuating that Romney has a fondness for falsehood. That's a bad, bad room to have checked yourself into when you're trying to unseat a sitting President. He's forged himself an unfavourable reputation in that space, and it's oozed into the mainstream.

When he gets cornered be facts in the debate, Romney will try shaking his head at the camera and going: "ha-ha-ha-ha-ha" to imply Obama's lying. That will have to be as frustrating to the president as will be to me. TeaBaggers will get it.

(59,504 posts)What Portman (or Kerry) is supposed to do is to try to use the best/strongest attacks or responses that the Republican is reasonably likely to use. The idea is to get their nominee able to have the needed concise response that slams the issue down.
Portman prepped Bush and McCain - neither of whom had good debates, though Bush likely did better in 2000 than he should have even before the media made on issue of "sighing". This does not say Portman is bad at this, look at what he had to work with! Again this year, he has what likely is an impossible job.
The ONLY weakness that reporters have suggested for Obama is that he has not debated since 2008. However, this ignores that he has met the press and Congress answering questions well - he is really good at that. In addition, he has something he did not have in 2008 - he is the President and that matters. Yet his practice will be against one of the best debaters in decades - who will likely be a tougher version of Romney than Romney himself! It is hard to believe that Obama, with the increased gravitas of the Presidency, his incredible intelligence, calm personality, and very pleasant smile won't look even better next to a Romney who can't hide his sneers and smirks.
I suspect one dynamic that Romney should - but won't - worry about is that he has always been the top guy in the room with the most power. This has been the case since he was tapped to be CEO of Bain Capital. Think of the times he pulled rank in the primary debates and remember how badly he responded when Gingrich called him when he said he had not wanted to be a career politician.

(743 posts)repugs are going to claim everything Obama said was a lie anyways and that Mittens was 100% truthful. I am not sure at the time when these debates happen if there is going to be any real undecideds left out there. Everyone will have probably picked a side by then and even though the President will trample Rmoney into the ground verbally each side will claim their man to be the winner. It is still going to be fun to watch and I am looking forward to the debates more then I am for Christmas.

Yikes. I remember that and I was surprised how well it worked. Sounds like Romney is going to do it.
Question is how to best defeat that tactic.
i think the best response is "NO, there YOU go again...."

(39,215 posts)find untruths in many things. There truly are two sets of facts and it corresponds with our two tiered society. What Mitt sees as truth is true for the 1% and what Democrats are saying is true for the rest of us. It all depends on which truth is actually good for all of us. That is where I follow the Democrats long before I follow the gop.

(59,504 posts)I don't think there is any CW that Obama lies or even often misstates stuff. There are CW that Romney and Ryan do.
Back in 1992, when Dan Quayle misspelled potato, many commented that this same mistake would not have hurt Bill Clinton - because there was not CW that he dumb.

(167 posts)Gary Johnson, on the ballot in 48 states and Jill Stein, on the ballot in 33 states are the only two candidates to have qualified for and accepted Federal Election Commission matching presidential campaign funds. Yet, they are being excluded from the debates by the private Commission on Federal Debates.
Without these two candidates in the debate, there are many issues that will not be lied about, they won't even be brought up.
Perhaps you could help and let a few friends know?

(14,176 posts)But..it was meant for Republican voters.
I think it was Machiavellianly brilliant in that regard.
Authoritarians, which conservatives are overwhelmingly, will believe anything they have to in order to sustain their viewpoint. All they need is to be fed what they believe from above. They are all now preconditioned to watch the debates with the understanding that everything Obama says, especially when refuting their candidate, is a LIE. Simple, just the way they like it. And the more the librul media says otherwise, that's just more proof they have it right.

(50,562 posts)Romney is going to a knife fight. He knows Obama is going to bring a gun for each hand and one in his sock... Romney, in turn, is bringing a sock full of gravel.
The Reagan quote worked for Reagan because it was so unexpected. Saying you're gonna use it three weeks before a debate gives your opponent three weeks to decide how to turn it back on you.
The thing about Romney saying Obama misquotes him.... Romney has pretty much announced Obama is going to curb stomp him but that's okay, voters-who-already-were-mine, the socialist Kenyan just lies about me.

(823 posts)One of the Republicans' favorite stratagies. Virtually every vile false accusation Romney has made, he and/or his minions have blamed Obama for having done. Whenever they blame the Democrats for something, one can be relatively certain that they have done or are about to do.
