Barr invited to meet DoJ officials on day he submitted memo critical of Mueller
Source: The Guardian
William Barr was invited to meet justice department officials last summer, on the same day he submitted an unsolicited memo that heavily criticized special counsel Robert Muellers investigation into obstruction of justice by Donald Trump.
Barr, who was a private attorney at the time, met the officials for lunch three weeks later and was then nominated to serve as Trumps attorney general about six months later.
The revelation about the meeting, which was arranged by Steve Engel, the head of the Office of Legal Counsel at the Department of Justice, and which has not previously been publicly disclosed, raises new questions about whether the White Houses decision to hire Barr was influenced by private discussions he had about his legal views on Muellers investigation.
Barr announced last month he had concluded there was not sufficient evidence found in the special counsels investigation to establish that Trump had committed obstruction of justice. He made the decision, he wrote in a letter to Congress, after consulting with Engel who is a legal adviser to the White House and Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general.
Barrs decision is controversial because, months before he was hired, he sent a 20-page memo to two top officials at the DoJ Engel and Rosenstein that called Muellers obstruction theory fatally misconceived and legally insupportable. Barr, who served as attorney general under George HW Bush, said he had written the memo in order to make sure that all of the lawyers involved carefully considered the potential implications of the theory that Mueller appeared to be pursuing.

(7,142 posts)after Barr was confirmed? It would have been nice had they released this prior to the hearings.

(15,286 posts)The unsolicited memo was out there as were Barr's previous actions to cover up Iran-Contra and to influence the 1992 election.

(13,043 posts)i applaud them for running the story to let the public know. In the least we can all form our own opinions on the matter, but i'm sure the House Intel Committee is already aware why Barr was installed there- to do the dirty job of covering up for the Idiot. It's no secret. We all already knew.

Barr is known as a cover up artist for Republicans.

(3,290 posts)planned coverup from beginning to end. I would hope the media, both print and TV, cover this extensively. I also hope that this kills Barr's legacy and career forever. Scum like this should not be allowed to practice law at the highest level of our government. Rosenstein is beginning to look not much better.

(1,388 posts)Invite Barr to cook his own goose in front of the world. Most importantly in front of intense scrutiny from the House. Barrs hiring and actions seems to wrap up obstruction for sure and maybe collusion as well.
And maybe I use woke up with a tin foil hat on!

(22,913 posts)though no one could ever have seriously believed Trump would nominate a new AG, after dumping Sessions for his "disloyalty", without screening them first on everything that Trump cares about. Here's that list:

(23,105 posts)no, it shows exactly what we all knew, he auditioned for the part with that memo and told them he'd make it clear that he will put drumpf above the constitution and all laws. This is just more proof that he is a russian repug traitor - like his boss just better spoken & not quite as stupid.
