Attorney Lori Lightfoot defeated Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle in Tuesday’s election, making her Chicago’s first African-American female mayor, according to unofficial returns.

Lightfoot jumped out to an early lead over Preckwinkle, a longtime political power broker, and had what appeared to be an insurmountable lead.

Lightfoot, a former federal prosecutor making her first run for elected office, had 74 percent to Preckwinkle’s 26 percent, with 1,583 of 2,069 precincts reporting, according to unofficial vote totals.

The two candidates emerged from a record field of 14 candidates in the Feb. 26 first-round election for the chance to become Chicago’s 56th mayor.

Lightfoot becomes the third African-American to serve as mayor. Harold Washington was elected in 1983 as the city’s first black mayor and won re-election in 1987 before dying in officer later that year. Eugene Sawyer, the city’s second black mayor, was appointed to serve out Washington’s term until a 1989 special election.

Whatever. I'm sure either of these two women would be no one they would vote for, ever.

I moved out of the city 18 years ago, but it's where my heart is. Old school politics has torn Chicago up.
This is a great break from "Da Machine"... Preckwinkle is in the top echelon of machine politics in Chicago/Cook County.
Change is here.
Work hard , Mayor Lightfoot. Chicago needs you.

Only 32% voted. In 1983 when Harold Washington was elected the first Black mayor the turnout was 82%. Ironically the only wards in the city which had good turnouts were the white wards. The Hispanic ward where I working for the Board of Elections had a 14% turnout.

They both are progressives. It's just that Toni has befriended some unethical politicians. Also, Toni has a lot of people who work for her constantly quitting. That is not good for a mayor.

I think the turnout would have been much higher if Suzanna Mendoza or Bill Daley were in run off.

The weather was OK, the media has been very active in covering the election, lots of face time for both on TV and only 32% showed up.
According to a judge I know in my small city about 60 miles away, the turnout was over 60% and there was nothing but alderman and park district seats up for vote. (A couple other things like water, streets, as well)

The important thing though, is to locate any gray linings of a silver cloud, regardless of how tangential, point them out and avoid analysis or examination.

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Mayor-elect Lori Lightfoot wants her former colleagues at the U.S attorney's office to re-examine the acquittals of three police officers accused of covering up the police shooting of Laquan McDonald.

A judge in January found the officers not guilty of conspiracy, obstruction of justice and official misconduct.

Former Officer Joseph Walsh, Officer Thomas Gaffney and former Detective David March were accused of lying in their reports to protect Officer Jason Van Dyke, who was convicted of murdering McDonald.

In an interview with NPR's "Morning Edition," Lightfoot said federal prosecutors should reopen their grand jury investigation. She says if they determine there are no civil rights violations they can bring against the officers, "they need to have a fulsome grand jury report."
