More Than 750,000 Could Lose Food Stamps Under Trump Administration Proposal

Source: NPR.

Three-quarters of a million people would likely lose their food stamps later this year under a new proposal by the Trump administration. The goal is to encourage able-bodied adults to go to work and get off government aid. But opponents predict people would go hungry instead, if the rule goes into effect.

A public comment period, which ends Tuesday, has so far drawn more than 28,000 comments overwhelmingly against the proposed rule.

Those affected by the proposed changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits are known as able-bodied adults without dependents, or ABAWDs. There were close to 4 million adults in this category receiving food stamps in 2016. About three-quarters of them did not work, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Giving tax dollars to soy bean farmers because they lost their market because of Trump's tariffs is Capitalism.

But wait, reThuglicans have eliminated good paying jobs with “right to screw” policies, union busting, splintering our nation’s teachers and school systems.

So, what DO they want, besides more money in their and their donors pockets. The only reason they would want a work requirement is so they can personally profit on a larger scale. Screw the worker, give me the money.

We need to start a modern day CCC program. Teach people the trades, encourage college participation, and put them to work. Don’t just smoke a doobie and say, “Hey guys, let’s tell these poor bastards to get a job.”

Another day in America, the country I love.

I suspect many of the so-called "able bodied" are folks with illnesses or disabilities that have not qualified for SSDI. I had a roommate who was denied SSDI for 3 years despite the fact that she had chronic Hep C and a badly injured right arm, which was her dominant side. While she had zero income, living on help from family, she got SNAP ($150 a month). When she finally got $850 a month SSDI, her SNAP dropped to $15 a month. FIFTEEN DOLLARS!

Then there are folks who are recently unemployed but don't qualify for unemployment insurance.

Of course she can't. I get that the S in SNAP is for "supplemental". But how much of a supplement is $15 a month? That you can buy a carton of eggs and a half gallon of milk per week? Big whoop! The thing is, because she has so little money, the quality of her diet is very poor and now she's morbidly obese and diabetic on top of everything else. I'm not even sure she can get a liver transplant anymore, even though she's on the list. FUCK!!!

Be happy they are doing this to them , just like he'll cut wages for everyone soon with his policies. They want the economy to collapse , and they'll use it to cut your wages from 25% to 50%. Just like they are cutting Medicaid , Medicare, and Social Security by trillions, then say the programs are so bad , like they are doing with the ACA, when they are the ones destroying it and causing premiums to skyrocket.

Does not mean someone is mentally capable of holding down any job. And doesn't count the working poor. Or government employees when tRump decides to do another shutdown.

...is that a person could have worked all their life, paying taxes every year, until they were unable to work for whatever reason. That could be thirty, forty years of paying taxes. Then maybe they can't work so as to take care of a family member, or can't find work with conditions that are tolerable, or whatever. Yet they are denied food stamps?

This attack on the poorest and most vulnerable among us. Even if they ARE working, having to email in paperwork repeatedly and "prove" you're not a deadbeat, is too much. I'm sure they have to send in something, or provide a tax return or something, to get it in the first place.

We've just GOT to win. People are getting hurt.

Sooner or later, some father, single mother, senior or other food stamp or welfare recipient is going to get to the point where NOTHING they may do matters to them in order to save their family, themselves or sick relatives because they are denied food or health benefits or much needed medicines..

They will, of course, but should not, revert to the second amendment solution but this time they may not "go postal" on neighbors....they may decide to aim higher. And with nothing to lose, feel they may do the rest of the country a favor.

As the idiot in charge says, this could be bad, very bad...for any of those who have decided to curtail help and assistance to those in dire need.

Bad, very bad. Where there's a will...

Sure the poor benefit but so do the farmers who sell their goods and the grocery stores that accept them. Pull that money out of the system and not only are poor people affected but prices will drop because fewer people will buy groceries and grocery stores will have fewer people in their stores causing some to close. It's just dumb policy to reduce SNAP benefits; cutting off your nose to spite your face or cutting off your right hand with your left.

"Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue says the administration thinks these people should be able to get jobs, especially now that the nation's unemployment rate is the lowest it has been in years."

Why didn't Sonny tell those farmers to go get a JOB and NO subsidies for Trumps tariff disaster?? If those are rolled back then go back to farming but quit living off the Guberment.

I’m not familiar with that reality. The families receiving assistance that I lived by were barely getting along and didn’t have the slightest interest in elections. Survival was at the forefront. Having the ability to care about and argue politics is a privilege.

If you're on foodstamps, basically you are confident that you're going to be screwed out of them eventually. When the hit finally comes, it's not a surprise. It's just part of the ongoing theme of living poor.

You're all the time having to notify them that you made a few bucks this month, then they screw you a little. You have to reapply every time you turn around. Then you get a letter that says "this redetermination of medical benefits MUST be returned by blah blah date," and it's ALWAYS two days from the day when it came to your mailbox -- screwed again.

If it weren't intertwined with being approved for medical, I wouldn't worry that much about it. Unfortunately, It is, though -- at least in lllinois.

Maybe that's why DT is going after it. He wants people to fall off of the Medicare rolls by failing to qualify for SNAP. -Just a thought.

Trump thinks the government tax take from working people is his personal money, and he doesn't want to waste any of it on 'socialist' social welfare.
So get rid of foreign aid, cut medical benefits, cut school budgets, etc

Leaves more money for Trump to do things he likes, like buy favour with the top 1%, build the wall, do the Space Force thing, etc.

Honestly, those people out there are such a drain on Trump's money.
