Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro will visit the White House on March 19 and is expected to discuss subjects including the situation in Venezuela with U.S. President Donald Trump, the White House said in a statement.
Bolsonaro is a far-right former army captain who openly admires Trump. In a phone call after Bolsonaros election victory in October, they spoke of a strong commitment to work side by side on issues affecting their countries.
Even before taking office in January, Bolsonaro pledged to oppose the government of Venezuela, where an economic crisis has caused millions of people to flee, many to neighbouring Brazil.
Since taking power, Bolsonaro has stepped up criticism of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduros government and recognized Juan Guaido, the opposition leader and self-declared president, as the leader of the OPEC member nation.

President Trump will host Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro at the White House later this month to discuss a range of issues, including "restoring democracy in Venezuela."
The White House said the March 19 meeting will focus on how to build a more prosperous, secure, and democratic Western Hemisphere.
. . .
Bolsonaros populist policies have led many to draw parallels between him and Trump, earning him the nickname Trump of the Tropics.
Hes raised eyebrows for praising Brazils former military dictatorship, advocating for torture, threatening to jail political opponents and criticizing women and the LGBTQ community.

(638 posts)It is accurate to describe him as a fascist. He has also called for a genocide of the indigenous people in the Amazon. Both of the individuals at the White House will not be remembered kindly to history.

(160,542 posts)He rose in the Legislature to dedicate his vote to impeach the progressive President, Dilma Rousseff, who had been imprisoned and tortured for a couple of years by the dictatorship, to the actual torturer who personally tortured Dilma. You can't get any lower than that.
Dilma Rousseff, sitting before the military court.
Very interesting to see the judges trying to hide
their nasty faces from the photographer.
Witnesses in later years said Dilma was extremely
courageous under wild mistreatment in prison.
Viva, Dilma Rousseff.
Down with the vicious fascists who have stolen power again.

After watching their manner long enough, a person sees what becomes unavoidably clear.
They are capable of flying beneath the radar, attacking Democrats and progressives at the personal level, which itself distinguishes them from actual progressives, and come to keep genuine progressive communication from being conducted peacefully.
Many progressives have left in disgust, which is undoubtedly celebrated as huge wins by these critters, but there are many who prefer to continue just to see the information gets an airing, no matter how many attackers it attracts.
Your instincts are accurate.

Maduro is losing support every day, I wish this could end sooner but I don't really see how our bringing our military to bear would help.

(10,183 posts)$8 billion to Conoco Phillips??????? Profit over people. Then we wonder why Venezuela is in such turmoil. This is how capitalism attacks socialistic countries.
One of the most profitable corporations in history is sucking dry Venezuela. And people want to blame Maduro and Chavez?

(10,183 posts)Yeah right, like oil and gas giant corporation didn't steal it from citizens to begin with.

(5,408 posts)They violated the contract and took all the infrastructure Conoco built, what did you think the ruling would be? Would you be OK with Trump expropriating private assists without any compensarion?

(10,183 posts)The Air Traffic controller unions also had contracts but it didn't seem to bother Raygun when he fired them all. When a corporation declares bankruptcy all hose pension contracts are wiped out by the judiciary.
When Thatcher directed the murders of the mine workers, they had Union contracts too.
Seems contracts always favor the uber rich. Because the laws are rigged in their favor especially in capitalistic countries. So don't dare to stand up to them or you end up having to not only fight political battles in your country but you get to fight all the rich oligarchs in the US too.

Chavez drives Exxon and ConocoPhillips from Venezuela
Brian Ellsworth
5 MIN READ
CARACAS (Reuters) - President Hugo Chavez pushed U.S. oil giants Exxon Mobil and ConocoPhillips out of Venezuela on Tuesday in a nationalization drive the United States said could hurt its oil supply.
Exxon Mobil (XOM.N) and ConocoPhillips (COP.N) quit their oil operations in the OPEC nation after they failed to strike a deal to stay in multibillion-dollar projects that the anti-U.S. leader decreed should be taken over.
ConocoPhillips said it would have to knock $4.5 billion (2.5 billion pounds) off its balance sheet after losing its assets in two Orinoco ventures and one smaller project, though it had previously said it believed the assets are worth substantially more.
Four other oil majors Chevron (CVX.N), Norways Statoil STL.OL, BP (BP.L) and Frances Total (TOTF.PA) signed pacts allowing Venezuela to increase its stake to as much as percent 83 percent in projects worth $30 billion.

What a shock it was when the Orange Nightmare took Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson as his Secretary of State, wasn't it?
Poor, poor Exxon:
"If ExxonMobil were a country, its economy would be bigger than Ireland's."
Victims? Probably NOT.
