US disaster agency rejects $306M for California dam repair

Source: Associated Press

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The federal government has rejected $306 million in reimbursements for California’s repair of damaged spillways on the nation’s tallest dam, a state agency said Friday.

California has so far requested about $639 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the Oroville Dam repairs, said Lisa Lien-Mager of the state’s Natural Resources Agency. FEMA has agreed to cover $333 million.

That’s less than about a third of the $1.1 billion the state’s Department of Water Resources said it took to repair the dam. Spillways on the Oroville Dam crumbled and fell away during heavy rains in February 2017, forcing nearly 200,000 people to evacuate amid fears the dam would collapse. Disaster was ultimately averted, but the dam needed significant repair.

The agency rejected $306 million in repairs for the dam’s upper gated spillway because it was damaged prior to the heavy rain, FEMA spokeswoman Brandi Richard said.

just stop sending money to Washington. Or withhold that amount until the money is reimbursed. CA sends more money to Washington than it gets back. Anyway, it's about time those red states stop relying on socialism (/S) and learn to support themselves without out having to rely on godless blue state money.

California state government for the most part doesn't send money to the US Treasury.

And Californians aren't going to stop paying income taxes.

I know what you wrote sounds good, but it doesn't sound like you've done any reading nor thinking on the topic beyond this post.

Deferred infrastructure spending means there is another Oroville potentially after any heavy rainstorm. Feds refusing to reimburse the state for this disaster, in essence pushing the risk onto the states, and thus making it more likely Feds will not give money for infrastructure maintenance, means we will have more such disasters, because states are less able to complete such massive infrastructure projects themselves.

Paradise was built in a forest. That was part of the character of the city. And since they knew it was in a high fire risk area, the city required raking leaves and pine needles, and cleaning fallen limbs and other debris, and removing flammable grass and brush from around homes

The horrible irony is that almost 50,000 people in Paradise and surrounding communities were literally raking the forest floor

And Drumpf is beneath contempt

Mon Mar 11, 2019, 07:49 PM

The city required exactly that

And there's more

The area the fire burned through to get to Paradise is a patchwork of US Forest Service land, ie Drumpf is in charge because Federal, and Sierra Pacific, which logged their land more than California's superenvironmentalists liked. So the forests outside Paradise were in fact maintained by a company growing trees as a crop with some interest in not having it burn up, and the US Government

And his reaction was to blame the people who lost everything because blaming California played well with the willfully ignorant

If your the opposition you don't get anything. He's politicized his position as President as a weapon against the American people because of political difference. He uses discrimination, and is against anyone or groups that refuse to bow down to him. Putin did this too in russia. Using his power to hurt others in this country , businesses in this country, and around the world hurting our allies should be more than enough of a huge red flag to understand how corrupt and criminal and cruel trump and his family and the gop really are.
