Newport Beach school officials condemn incident after images go viral: ‘Our community is repulsed’

A group of California high school students appeared to do the Nazi salute while standing around cups arranged in the shape of a swastika, according to social media photos of a party that have sparked an investigation.

School officials in Newport Beach confirmed that the authorities were investigating “students who created inappropriate antisemitic symbols” after images went viral over the weekend showing about a dozen students smiling next to red plastic cups displayed as a swastika. The scandal in southern California follows a string of recent cases involving antisemitic and racist vandalism and other forms of hate speech involving American schools and students.

“Our community is, of course, repulsed by it,” Martha Fluor, the vice-president of the local school board, said in an interview on Monday. “It’s history repeating itself. We need to step back and make sure the lessons we are teaching our students in high school are embedded in tolerance … and valuing diversity.”

The images from a party, which was not on school grounds and not a sanctioned event, started spreading on Saturday after outraged people began posting screenshots from Snapchat. One photo published on Twitter showed students raising their cups above the swastika and another showed a group of them around the table laughing and smiling as they appeared to do the Nazi salute. Captions on Snapchat said “ultimate rage” and “German rage cage”.

I'd almost bet that's what Bannon, Miller, Gorka et al actually meant when they came up with that one.

Newport Beach has long been a hotbed of Bircherism - with a small but influential community of Nazi emigrés included.

And the ones you met (descendants of said Nazis) were proud of it.

We'd get kicks and giggles by calling the number and listening to the nazi message.
But I agree, Newport Beach /Huntington Beach.

missed it, Orange County kicked out the rethugs in November. Rohrabacher, royce, issa, walters - gone. My assembly district even booted the rabid right wing male assembly person for the progressive Democratic woman.

Newport beach is a sink hole full of rethugs. The rest of the county has moved on.

I am glad both of my grandfather's who fought are not alive to see these neo-fascists betray everything they fought for.

I went with a group of people from different schools and one of the girls, was Jewish, her reaction of horror as we toured the showers and ovens helped shape my views on hatred.

is that these entitled, well-to-do, pampered little shit holes don't even understand what they're supposedly embracing. They lack the moral depth, historical framework and ethical comprehension to grasp what that salute means.

All they're doing is imitating what they see in the public discourse. Flouting something that causes an uproar because they think it's cool to rattle peoples' cages. Ask them to explain - in detail - what it all means and all you'll get is a confused, blank stare.

It isn't rebellion, kids, it's ignorance. Better hit those books a little harder.

I noticed the school board rep said the reaction from some in the community was that the incident was “just a prank” and that the students didn’t understand the meaning of their actions
The school noted underage drinking, but were still debating discipline action

Red cups are popular for games of beer pong — and for ‘Alcoholocaust’

In the grand tradition of the Tiki Brand and the makers of Skittles, the company that produces Solo cups would like you to please not use their product for racist or Nazi activity.

“Our brand is all about helping our fans celebrate food, fun and family responsibly by bringing people together, not tearing them apart,” Margo Burrage, communications director for Dart Container Corporation, wrote to the Forward. In other words — if you’re celebrating with friends, your cup runneth over. Why bring Nazis into it?

In one of the most expensive zip codes in America, Newport Beach, California, a group of teenagers documented themselves using red Solo Cups to form the shapes of swastikas for a game of beer pong with just a hint of Third Reich flair. The Los Angeles Times reported that the teens posted images to social media of the ubiquitous cups making a bright red swastika shape, with some teenagers doing nazi salutes.

“We condemn this use of our products and in no way condone or support their use to promote racism, intolerance or violence,” Burrage wrote.
