Trump made the announcement after inviting Hayden Williams, the conservative activist attacked at Berkeley, to the stage to speak. Williams briefly spoke and the president followed up with words of praise.
He took a punch for all of us, Trump said. And we could never allow that to happen. And here is, in closing with Hayden, heres the good news. Hes going to be a wealthy young man.
After Williams thanked the president and walked off-stage, Trump announced the executive order:

The guy who ran Rump University has no business telling a college how to manage policy. He is a dictator. Not even pretending anymore. He must be STOPPED.

(9,090 posts)all those stations have been screaming about 'liberal' professors, 'political correctness', and setting up the lies and distorted memes and alt realities those con speakers try to sell.
the republicons will scream bloody murder if protestors at those unis try to get them to look for apolitical alternatives to broadcast sports on, thereby scaring away their advertisers. they will claim the school can't make decisions based on politics! even though all limbaugh stations serve the GOP 12-15 hrs/per day. very few if any of those stations aren't 100% republican megaphones
it is inevitable students at those universities start protests like that when they figure it out. maybe the cons are trying to head it off before hand - but it won't matter - as soon as advertisers see the discussion happening they will have to decide if they want to support trump or not. most will go elsewhere. and when it happens at one school others will follow.

(101,318 posts)saying they are "oppressed", and painting universities as an enemy. It won't matter to his followers, him, or his controllers, whether they actually succeed in any court in having a university found to have 'prevented free speech'. It's enough for them that they can paint anyone intelligent as "the enemy of the people". If a court finds against Trump's minions, they'll just paint the court as "elitist" and "university educated".
It's not enough for them to say the media is the "enemy of the people"; they need everyone who points out what Trump's crimes are, or that he (and his backers) are trashing the environment, and the economy, and relations with other countries, to be "enemies" as well.
This will be like the "War on Christmas", but it'll be about insisting RWers get paid by universities to give talks, and they'll scream "oppression!" the moment someone refuses. It'll be theater, on TV and in the courts.

(37,648 posts)Seems it just gives someone denied access an avenue for a lawsuit.
Or maybe the EO should be challenged in the courts up front. Universities do not to abide by some laws that public institutions do, because they are private.
Still, it is well known that any company or organization that takes federal dollars have to abide by some federal laws, like affirmative action.

(18,633 posts)I'm not sure universities will be required to ensure the safety of anyone capable of stepping up on a soapbox and incendiary speech can have consequences. Shitpot stirrers will attend merely to hopefully get a video recording of "intolerance" on the left, but that hurts little if the speaker is wearing a hood or a swastika. "Hey! Liberal college students cut the mic on a Nazi!! Call the Post."
Sure, conservatives like Pat Buchanen, Glenn Beck, or Walter Williams will be able to voice their opinions by law, but who cares? As mainstream crackpots they'd likely just gather a small crowd and not much backlash from the student body anyway. Without massive attention, they won't come back.
Really, Trump's XO only serves anti-social hate speech that goes over the line of what is decent. Go figger.

(9,350 posts)For years I have felt Republican do not want freedom of speech; they want freedom from criticism. They want to be freed to say whatever they want and not be challenged by anyone. They want to give speeches and have everyone in the room cheer their comments. They want to speak up in class and have teachers nod their heads in approval and not correct them or demand the Republicans provide proof for their comment(s).
Republicans want, on college campuses, what Matt Schlapp recently demanded the main stream media do for Donald Trump. Schlapp mainly demanded that the main stream media stop telling their viewers that Trump is telling a lie when Trump lies. Republicans want to be able to make false statement and have teachers and other student not be able to tell them they are wrong.
People have a right to make comments. However, other people also have a right to express their opposition to the comments made by their fellow students and guests of the school. Anyone has the right to make a speech at a college campus. However, the students of that college campus have a right to hold a protest in order to show their disapproval of the person making those remarks, or the remarks being made.

(14,574 posts)A plan to make college more affordable and accessible, particularly to minority students. No American kid, and that includes the Dreamers, should graduate from college into debt slavery. Because face it - a kid who graduates with $37K in debt and has to pay $350/month can't afford all the things we afforded when we were that age.
Basically, we have allowed our children and grandchildren to be victimized by predatory capitalism and it's got to stop.
