Dems block Senate GOP bill on infants surviving abortions
Source: Associated Press
Senate Democrats on Monday blocked a Republican bill that would have threatened prison for doctors who dont try saving the life of infants born alive during abortions. The measure seemed doomed from the start but offered the GOP a chance to appeal to conservative voters.
The vote was the latest instance in which Republicans have tried to go on offense on the issue and put Democratic abortion-rights lawmakers in an uncomfortable position. Supporters said the measure presented lawmakers with a simple, moral choice.
I want to ask each and every one of my colleagues whether or not were OK with infanticide, said the measures chief sponsor, Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb.
Opponents, noting the rarity of such births and citing laws already making it a crime to kill newborn babies, said the bill was unnecessary. They said it is part of a push by abortion opponents to curb access to the procedure and intimidate doctors who perform it, and said late-term abortions generally occur when the infant is considered incapable of surviving after birth.

(25,857 posts)The anti-choice people try to make it sound common, just as they try to present women who get abortions as ditzes who casually, on the spur of the moment, with no good reason at all, just decide to have an abortion.
I have some questions for those people:
1. Have you ever been pregnant?
2. Do you have a body that can become pregnant?
3. If the answer to number 2 is no, have you ever possibly have been in a circumstance where you might have caused a pregnancy?
4. What did you do about that?
5. Have you ever been told, after the 1st trimester of your pregnancy, that the fetus had anomalies incompatible with life? How did you react to that?
6. Do you believe that all pregnant women should have access to free pre-natal care?
7. Do you believe there should be universal child care available?
8. Do you think men should be financially responsible for their children? Why or why not?
9. What makes you think you can make a decision about abortion for someone else? Really?
10. Have you ever adopted a child? Why not?
11. Do you think there should be universal child care leave? Why or why not?
Those are just a few. I'm sure many more questions could be asked of those who think their narrow minded views should apply to everyone else.
Dear lord, I wish I could be dictator of North America and also be able to alter things so that men who oppose abortion could get pregnant.
