Nevada governor to boycott Trump meeting

Source: The Hill

BY REID WILSON - 02/23/19 10:45 AM EST

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak (D) will not attend meetings at the White House this week in protest of the Trump administration's decision to secretly ship a thousand pounds of plutonium to a nuclear waste facility outside of Las Vegas.

Sisolak, who won office in November, said his administration has asked the Trump administration and the Department of Energy repeatedly for clarification about the shipment, but so far they have received no response.

"The president, without our knowledge, decided to have half a ton of plutonium shipped to the state of Nevada. We don't know when it was shipped, how it was shipped, when it got there," Sisolak told The Hill in a brief interview Saturday morning.

"My main focus is to protect the citizens of my state, and I feel it would be disingenuous to go and have a sit-down dinner with the president and the administration when we've written letters, tried to get responses to why this was done, and thus far heard crickets," he said.

It appears that this administration doesn't follow any conventions of professionalism whatsoever.

This apparent plutonium shipment is a very big deal and should be a major news story. WTF???

Correct me if I am wrong, but I remember very recently this admin just weakened the regs on the toxic levels of Nuke waste. Throw in some good clean Russian asbestos and clean coal ash. We gettin great yet? MAGA, God sent him. 💥🌍🌑🔥🐘🇷🇺💰✋✋

... it had to be physically transported through God knows how many states to get here, passing through populated areas with no notice to relevant authorities.

nuclear waste to a FEDERAL NATIONAL SECURITY FACILITY? Isn't that where such waste is supposed to be disposed of and protected? I get it that Nevada is unhappy about the site, but where do you suggest they waste should have been disposed of? Who thinks it is a good idea to risk news of the transfer getting out to every domestic terrorist in the country? Am I missing something here?

shipment going through his state. That doesn't mean Trump had to announce it to the world, it just means that the Governor should have been informed. Now he probably couldn't have stopped the shipment, and I doubt that the Gov would have announced it to the world. But some of Trump's actions or non-actions, are things which are done as a simple courtesy. Trump thinks he's a king and can just treat people like they are shit and he can just ignore them. The Governor of Nevada was elected just like Trump and he has a constituency as well. Trump doesn't own the State of Nevada and all it's highways, bridges and interstates. What if there had been an accident during the shipment and it was the state where you live. Wouldn't you want your Governor to know in advance so he can make sure that the movers have all the advance information that they needed to minimize the probability of something going array.

For the record, Las Vegas got snow for the first time that I can recall a few days ago. My son has lived there for about 10 years and it was the first time he could recall getting snow in the southern part of the state. I heard about it on the early morning news here in Georgia, and text him before he was even awake to let him know snow was forecast for that morning in Las Vegas. He hadn't heard about it when he went to bed the night before. I doubt if a truck driver hauling Plutonium cross country said to himself, let me check the weather forecast for Las Vegas now, to see if there is any snow forecast for when I should be arriving from my cross country journey with my load of Plutonium.

It's called common courtesy and the Trump's seem to be the only ones who were never taught it.

The more governors and their staff that know about the transfer, the more likely the transfer will become vulnerable to attack by right wing crazies or terrorists.

but there the NUKE waste lies and for decades.

Nothing is truly going to be done until the NUKE communities put a STOP to
NUKE production and own up to their own waste.

Sending waste any distance is dangerous and there is no reason NOW to believe
any kind of accident wouldn’t be covered up by this administration.

the best practices we know to store and manage nuclear waste now. You want to increase the chances of more nuclear contamination of the environment because you're mad at the government and the nuclear industry? That's not rational.

Billions of TAX PAYER’S dollars have gone to research, site management and contractors and the
best they can do, after nearly a Century, is hire contractor after contractor to move this sh*t around in the ground.

I don’t want it anywhere near me or my family any more.

The community that owns it should burden it.

P.s. what is to like about the nuclear industry?

taking steps to dispose of nuclear waste in a safe and environmentally prudent manner. Let's applaud that rather than insist that waste stay in communities where it will continue to pose a danger to humans and the environment.
