Black woman replacing Alabama newspaper editor who endorsed KKK's return

Source: The Hill

BY MORGAN GSTALTER - 02/23/19 07:38 AM EST

After facing immense backlash for penning an editorial that called for the Ku Klux Klan to “ride again,” an Alabama newspaper editor is turning over control of the publication to a black woman.

The Democrat-Reporter, a small-town paper in Linden, Ala., announced Friday that Elecia R. Dexter, 46, will take over as publisher and editor.

Goodloe Sutton, 80, will still maintain ownership of the publication, but Dexter told the Associated Press that she will “handle everything else.”

News of the editorial change comes after Sutton made national headlines earlier this month for writing an editorial calling for the Klan to “ride again” to block tax increases in the state.

I hate to say but the headline wording for this story at almost every source, is disingenuous BumRushDaShow Feb 2019 #2

Is it really a "win" outside of getting rid of the douchebag editor/publisher? BumRushDaShow Feb 2019 #4

by denoting her race as a descriptor in order to somehow absolve the paper and indicate - "See? We're not racist!!11!! We're going to stick a black woman in there to run the paper (ha ha)".

Why not just say "Alabama newspaper editor and publisher to be replaced" and then go on to give the replacement's name and bio, etc.

Here is an article that includes more bio info - https://www.al.com/news/2019/02/alabama-newspaper-that-ran-kkk-editorial-now-led-by-african-american-woman.html

Paper's press release - http://www.westalabamawatchman.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/The-Democrat-Reporter-New-Publisher-and-Editor.pdf (PDF)

(I really don't see where she is qualified for this particular position other than being a local with a couple of degrees in Speech/Human Resources/Counseling, but if she can manage to bring in people to bring about a positive change, then that will help)

That will be up to her and the rest of the town - and I say this as a black female who has seen some bullshit go on that appears to be legit but masks nothing more than snarky paternalistic pandering. Because what might happen, if she is not careful, is that a whole lot of undermining will go on behind the scenes and the paper ends up folding... and they will then say "See? We tried but....". I am hoping the community can rally behind her to not only help to make it an inclusive newspaper, but one that will also provide excellent and timely coverage of critical local/state/national news.

Linden, AL has a population of about 2,000, that is 59% white and 41% black (based on the last ACS from the Census Bureau), so it will be interesting to see how tight-knit a community it is and whether they are ready to move on.
