Record number cite poor leadership as US's greatest problem: poll

Source: The Hill

BY JOHN BOWDEN - 02/18/19 07:46 AM EST

More than a third of Americans say that poor leadership is the greatest problem facing America, the highest percentage ever recorded to say so, according to a poll released Monday.

A Gallup poll released on Presidents Day found that 35 percent of Americans say that poor leadership ranks as the most important problem in the country, edging out immigration or gun violence.

The percentage is the highest ever recorded by Gallup and is a two-point increase from the previous record set in 2013 during that year's government shutdown. The number has been steadily increasing since President Trump took office in 2017, the pollsters noted, and ranked as Americans' top concern all but two months last year.

Much of the increase has been among Republicans, where Gallup says there was a 14-percent increase in the frequency of mentioning the government as the most important problem facing the U.S.

They represent their rich donors, and ignore ordinary working people. No working class citizen should be fooled by them. They are for the RICH. They get into the WH, foul everything up almost beyond repair, then expect a democratic president to clean up the mess, with no co-operation from them. The orange mistake in office now is their very worst - so far. Give them time, they will outdo themselves.

Trump, his administration, and Congressional Republicans like Lindsey Graham are not only poor leaders, they are also morally bankrupt. Mueller cannot finish his investigation fast enough. We are sliding down the chute to totalitarianism ever faster with each passing day.

Are perfect examples of how bad they are as leaders, both corrupt, both liars, and both involved with putin and russia. It will catch up to them both too.

We, the people, have to step up and embrace the reality that a democratically elected representative form of government requires our ACTIVE participation. We have sat back and cried in our beer about the horrible people who run the government. Finally, thanks to the orange blob we seem to be waking up and taking back our responsibilities as citizens.

I'm an old fart and I've been just as guilty as anyone most of my life. I have a granddaughter who will be 1 year old in April, for her I have become active in my county's party and will continue to function in that role as long as I am able. I am not a joiner, I hate sitting through meetings, and I have to drive 60 miles to attend most of them.

I hope a number of you will consider taking an active role in helping change the direction we have been heading and repairing the damage that has been done.

Sitting around complaining about the quality of our "leadership" just isn't going to cut it.

As Obama once said, "Democracy takes work."

A depressing number of citizens seem to be OK with being ruled (which doesn't take work, just obedience) rather than being governed. Feels like we're finally snapping out of our collective coma, but just in the nick of time- and we're now so close to the edge of authoritarian disaster, the outcome will depend more than ever on our collective will to defeat this corrupt, treasonous crowd and to rebuild our democracy.

is the reinstatement of mandatory high school classes in civics and American History. Yes, the American History part will be a challenge since the folks on the right will only want American Mythology taught but it has to start somewhere. Currently we have generations of middle aged and young people who have no clue how the system is supposed to work much less actually works.

Just one part of returning actual citizenship to people who live in this country.

It happens to be from a large pack of very wealthy invisible people cleverly hiding from view. They lead us and many of our politicians around like puppies on a leash.

They control us by keeping us enamored to consumerism from cradle to grave. Then, they take profits from our purchases of goods and service and turn that money against us.

Look at the amount of money it takes just to get elected to many state offices. It's damned vulgar, and liberals have to spend hard-earned funds to counter the massive spending by billionaires several states away. Next, we have to spend more of our money on charities because Republicans whack funds for social services.

Good, potentially strong political leaders can't let their light shine so long as a billionaire has a noose around his/her neck. It's way past time to get big-spender campaign and lobbying money out of out politics.

There are times when we have a period of good and strong leaders who guide the country - i.e. 1930s - 60s

For the last 25 years we have had a trending into mediocre.

For at least 40 years, they have actively and quite competently endeavored to fuck us all any way they can. Everyone but the top 1%, that is. And they've succeeded spectacularly.

we ignore rw talk radio

dems, media, need to poll for rw talk radio because in the huge parts of the country it dominates, 50 mil a week will be hearing regularly that democrats are the real problem, wasting time and obstructing leadership with fake investigations and deep state treason, socialism/communism, global warming hoaxes, letting brown hoards in to vote for dems, etc.....

that is not just an expression of free speech - it's a 20-1 monopoly that is more and more likely being used by the russians
and it's going to keep pounding huge parts of the country with that alternative reality, endorsed by more than 88 major universities and a lot of pro sports teams
