Kentucky Coal-Fired Power Plant Will Close Despite Trump's Objection

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — A federal utility board has voted to close a coal-fired power plant in Kentucky over the objections of President Donald Trump and some state GOP leaders.

The Tennessee Valley Authority voted Thursday to retire the remaining coal-fired unit at its Paradise Fossil Plant in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, by December 2020.

The decision could put 131 people out of work. Also, the coal the TVA buys from nearby mines supports 135 jobs.

Trump tweeted his support for the plant on Monday after state GOP leaders, including Republican Gov. Matt Bevin, urged the board to delay its vote. TVA CEO Bill Johnson said the decision about finances. TVA officials says costs to its more than 10 million customers will be $320 million less if they close the plant.

Hey Bevin's can I call you Bevin's. Why don't you in your "executive time" to work just like the orange hair traitor and go out and get a company that makes "NEW GREEN DEAL" technology to put those workers back to work for the "long term", have you tried that lately?.............I really don't think so.......................

Almost 270 people and their dependents are about to have their lives turned upside down. I've lost my job twice. It ain't fun. Hope these folks have the means to recover like I did.

Government should step in with solar/wind training. And if those paying higher electric bills to support a few hundred jobs, sounds like socialism to me.

Then I want to see how many of those who will lose their jobs in the plant and in the mines will take these courses and how many will wait for Trump to reopen the plant and mines.

Worked for the Methodist Church for several years in SW VA, NE TN, SE KY, and S VA.

A few of the laid-off workers will either move or take advantage of retraining.

Most of them will stay there, try to live on part-time work and food stamps, all the while bitching and moaning about the Democrats and voting for Trump. Count on it.

scenario has and is playing out through out the USA. As someone who has seen Employers go bust without ever making the last payroll, know to well how things play out. One hopes his or her skill sets will move one into a better place. One cannot become complacent with ones skill set,you need to keep on improving your skills.

2 coal fired plants 2 years ago. They are obsolete. Like many big Hospitals here closing,or close to because of empty beds.

Small consolidated Satellites are spring up all over due to the drastic changes in medicine and bed stays. Much better, more convenient. All in one,Primary Doctors, Specialists, tests cancer treatment, eye surgeries.

We can not live in the past. Coal is gone.

Mining coal and burning coal both have horrific effects on the environment.

They can put that $320 million they'll save the first year toward retraining the 266 utility workers and miners who willl lose their jobs, and have enough left over to make them all millionaires.
