O'Rourke meets with Schumer to discuss 2020 Senate bid
Source: Politico
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer met with former Texas Rep. Beto ORourke last week to discuss a possible 2020 Senate campaign against GOP Sen. John Cornyn, according to a source familiar with the meeting.
ORourke, a Democrat who lost narrowly against Sen. Ted Cruz in 2018, is considering running for president and hasnt publicly discussed running again for Senate in 2020. But he also hasnt ruled it out.
ORourke and former Obama Cabinet secretary Julián Castro who has announced his own White House bid are considered by many Democrats to be the partys best prospects for defeating Cornyn.
A spokesman for ORourke did not return a request for comment on the meeting. Schumers office declined to comment.

(6,916 posts)We have lots of good presidential candidates.
We need Democratic Senators.
NOTHING gets done without 51 votes in the Senate in 2020. Nothing. Nada. Zero.
Beto can win in TX. Lets do this Beto!!!!

(9,999 posts)I think Cornyn would be harder to beat than Cruz but would love to see Beto as a senator and then eventually maybe a Presidential candidate. But please, we need him somewhere. He is too good to not be in government,

(37,648 posts)could Schumer be trying to divert Beto's attention from the Presidential race? Or does he really think Beto has a good chance for replacing Cornyn?
I don't like to see someone follow advice that's given just because Schumer thinks Beto is the Dem Party's best shot in years, when the shot is small, at best.

(11,088 posts)He now has the respect and name recognition to do the trick. Even if he falls short, he will still have made the Republicans spend far more on what should be a safe republican seat than they would feel comfortable doing.

(37,648 posts)It could kill his political career. He should give this serious thought. The Democratic Party's goal is not necessarily is what good for him. It would be fine w/Schumer if Beto lost but damaged Cornyn. It could kill Beto's career. Making Republicans spend more is not a reason to run. The Republicans have seemingly endless supply of money. Spending more here and there means nothing to them, beyond shifting their money around. It's no reason for a politician to spend a lot of money and use up what is left of his political career.
But he could win. It's a longshot. I don't see it, though. Cornyn is VERY popular and his support in TX is rock solid.

(25,183 posts)an immediate beneficiary with be Rep. Castro. Texas members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus will be free to endorse him early for the nomination. Right now, they have to keep their powder dry to see if either O'Rourke or Castro will pull out ahead of the other in the still-young race.
I expect Sen. Harris to do well in the California primary that has been radically moved up in time, but we may see Castro do well there, too, especially if he can make a top-two showing in Nevada just before that.

(14 posts)I would love to see it happen, but it won't. He would certainly do better than any other candidate but he would still lose by around 8-10 points. Beto's performance against Cruz was a perfect storm. It was a very blue year and Cruz is disliked by nearly everyone.
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)Running against him could damage Cornyn some, but it could kill Beto's political career, as he becomes labeled as a two-time loser.
I wonder if Schumer wants to get Beto out of running for President, if Beto is indeed thinking about that. Schumer surely knows that the odds of anyone ousting Cornyn is almost zero.
