Rep. Nina Lowey: We Didn't Talk to Hannity, Coulter, or Drudge Before Striking Border Deal

Appearing on CNN’s New Day Tuesday, Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY) — who chairs the House appropriations committee — said that the Fox News host’s bashing of the agreement as a “garbage compromise” is a sign that the deal has merit.

“That probably confirms for me that it’s a good deal,” Lowey said. “I would hope Sean Hannity and all the other people you mentioned aren’t running this government. This was a bipartisan deal. Senate and House. Republican, Democrat. And I think we did an excellent job that all parts of our caucuses can accept.”

New Day co-host Alisyn Camerota pressed Lowey — saying that a previous deal on the issue in September had been scuttled after the president got cold feet following criticism from the likes of Hannity, Ann Coulter, and Matt Drudge.

“Look, when we sat around this table and negotiated this deal, we didn’t call Sean Hannity. We didn’t call Coulter. We didn’t call all the people you mentioned,” Lowey said. “This was a deal that was negotiated between Republicans and Democrats, House and Senate. And we think we came to a good compromise — again, that would secure our border, because that’s the goal. We have to uphold our values, secure our border, get a deal that we can support, and I think we did a good job.”

2. Trumpy won't compromise. My guess is that he'll veto BECAUSE

he loves to stress the system. He's disruptive. He knows nothing that can be viewed as "constructive." All he can do is raise barriers to progress and, in the words of Bannon, "destroy the administrative state." He believes that he keeps his base by saying "no." So it will be up to Congress to override his veto and keep government functioning.

I'm hoping for a veto and a Congressional override. Here's why: we benefit from a bipartisan Congress. It's Congress that has to step up and stop this incessant pandering to Trumpy and his base, and do something for the well-being of the nation.

He will bitch, moan, whine, lie and claim it as a victory.

If he takes the deal he will start to divert money to expand the barrier. His racists followers will not abandon him just as the Nazis didn't abandon Hitler as Berlin was leveled. It takes reasonable people to act reasonably.

9. If Trump shuts down the government over this compromise,

Then the TSA, Air Traffic Employees and others will shut down the whole country. I believe the reports that these employees at 80 airports are more than willing to shutdown for a few days rather than a few weeks. I think Saturday and Sunday, maybe Monday, would do the trick. Trump has less control over these people than he thinks. These are the people that help keep major airlines, shipping companies and all of their customers earning all of their big bucks. These are the people who are serving the American and the world wide public while they worry about keeping food on the table, gas in the tank and a roof over their head. Trump can't push them anymore.

10. Here's hoping Hannity, Coulter and Drudge don't veto the GOP negotiators

This is a blog by an Australian trade negotiator, who has been commenting on the Brexit negotiations. It's mainly aimed at how the British have been muddling through, but I think this applies here too:

What a (Trade) Negotiator Needs Most

Whether you are a lowly junior public servant working on a minor footnote or the Prime Minister, you are understood to be channeling a portion of the collective authority of your country and its government. In dealing with you, the other side needs to understand the extent of that authority… and its your job to make that clear.

Good negotiators are obsessive about not overstating their authority. The junior public servant above would take pains to say that while they can hammer out draft language, it will need to be considered and approved by their chapter lead, the legal team and even the Chief Negotiator before it can be considered ‘agreed language.’ They will do this even on language they’re certain won’t face objections.



… but we understand you will need to run this past Admiral Obvious and the Joint Chiefs of Obviousness before we can consider the matter closed.

Second, you under no circumstances want to overstate your authority. It is the one guaranteed way to lose the trust, goodwill and cooperation you need to get the job done.

For a government to sign a deal is to say to the other side, “I can get this agreement ratified.” The Prime Minister was unable to carry much of her own party, let alone the broader House of Commons, in that endeavor. Other parties can forgive an unanticipated hiccup like a single Belgian region (Wallonia) blocking CETA for a bit, but a 230 vote annihilation in the House is something else.

GOP politicians face the same problem. A few unelected lunatics have the ear of Trump, and can persuade him to veto anything they feel like, because he's had self-esteem issues since he finished potty-training. And they've gone along with the crazed RW media directing the Republicans for 25 years (Limbaugh should, of course, be added to the list of puppeteers), because they get the equivalent of billions of dollars-worth of free political ads from them when they fall in line.
