Trump tries to turn border debate his way with El Paso rally

WASHINGTON (AP) President Donald Trump is trying to turn the debate over a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border back to his political advantage as his signature pledge to American voters threatens to become a model of unfulfilled promises.
... snip ...
Trump has repeatedly exaggerated the impact of El Pasos fencing on the citys crime rate, as well as statistics about crime committed by people who have entered the U.S. illegally.
El Paso is home to one potential Democratic challenger to Trump, former Rep. Beto ORourke, who unsuccessfully challenged Sen. Ted Cruz in 2018 and maintains an army of small-dollar donors and a large social media following. The campaign adviser, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal thinking, insisted the venue had nothing to do with ORourke.
But there was nothing subtle about ORourkes response: Hell be joining a march though his hometown to protest a border wall at the same time as Trumps rally.

I'd love to see the number attending Beto's march be so huge in comparison to the number attending Trump's rally that the mainstream media will pronounce as fake news Trump's inevitable lies about how his crowds were bigger.

(20,249 posts)Why isn't * working at the job of the office instead of staging ridiculous campaign rallies. Wasting taxpayers' $$. Arrogant and impudent.

(3,256 posts)El Paso is heavily Democratic and I am sure he has lost a good share of the few who voted for him. I would love to see him in an empty arena.

Wait if * pulls another shutdown.
Or vetoes this so-called 'agreement' in the supposed works.
I think it's hogwash what's being reported as if the two sides are working on an acceptable outcome.
* demands that stupid wall in his head. Not gonna budge unless push comes to shove.
About time for his enablers to act. What will it take.

(227 posts)so there will be people at his rally...BUT if he really wants to talk to his wall supporters he needs to go to IA or MI or PA....places far away and ignorant of the border workings but still terrified of those brown people

(20,192 posts)El Paso is that patch of dark blue on the far left. Don't be concerned with the sea of red. Those are very low population counties; some have less than 1000 residents.

(38,559 posts)any time he holds any kind of "rally," is he using tax-payer money? I mean I get that wherever he goes he gets secret service protection, but who is actually funding these rallies? Is it the GOP? Is it PACs? Campaign funds?
